Description
The brewery was founded by Phil and Cynthia “Scuttle” Bannan in 1996 with a 20 barrel system in the brew house, two 20 barrel fermenters and one 20 barrel bright tank. Since then our capacity has grown and we have broadened our product line to include more than 20 styles of hand-crafted ales and lagers.
After more than 20 years Scuttlebutt Brewing Company remains family owned and independent.
Since the beginning Scuttlebutt beers have been brewed in Everett with the Northwest’s finest ingredients – barley from Vancouver, Washington, hops from the Yakima Valley, a proprietary yeast from Odell, Oregon and some of the nation’s finest drinking water from the Spada Reservoir in the Cascade Mountains. Our beers are clean, balanced and have been brewed with care for over 17 years.

Clean golden color with creamy head. There is some malt aroma, simple. The malt flavor is quite good, better than expected, with a good bitterness level and an excellent balance of hop qualities, moderately fruity and resiny; it has a light residual sweetness that makes it more pleasant, and the mouthfeel is quite round.
Good.

very rich roasted malts, the hops are present but never overbearing. Most enjoyable beer from this brewery.

Draught at Kamikaze. Dark brown, almost black, thin lacy head. Nose of chocolate, coffee, tobacco, light phenols, a touch of cabbage. Flavor is chocolate fudge, earth, light coffee, some berries. Nice fine carbonation. Well balanced, not very German, but very chocolately and tasty and good bitterness.

12oz bottle. Hazy unfiltered orange-tan body with a frothy, glass lacing head. Decent IIPA, earns some points for being 8.99 a six pack certainly. Leaning towards the toasty side of the IIPA equation, with some dry, biter, grapefruit hops. Bullion hops? First I’d heard of them..now fascinated. Middle of the road in a lot of respects, but still well executed and pleasant.

On tap at The Copper Hog in Bellingham, pours near black with a small beige head. Aroma is very black-IPA like with equal amounts of roasted malt and citrus hops bursting to the surface on the nose. Flavour is very roasty and hoppy as well, beginning with lots of roasted malt, then transitioning to the bitter hops. Lots of depth. A by-the-books, but well-executed black IPA.

2012-12-22, draught at the brewpub, 5.1% ABV, 6-4-6-3-13=32
Hazy amber color with creamy head. Like many Amber Ales, this one as well is quite boring; there is some malt, more in the flavor, with light residual sweetness, some late caramel, and a good bitterness level. The hop qualities are shy but not absent.
Decent.
2012-07-27, draught at Tavolata, Seattle, 6-4-5-2-11=28
Hazy amber color. Nice aroma, perfumy, some hop, malt, yeast, in the order. Simple caramel flavor, with some diacetyl and fermentation by-products, maybe not fresh. Some fruity touch in the end, from the yeast, not from the hop. Ordinary bitterness.

Clean golden color with creamy head. The aroma has some caramel, but rather simple, while the caramel flavor is quite good; as many other beers from Scuttlebutt, it has some residual sweetness; good bitterness level, although the hop qualities are moderate, some sturdy resins, maybe Cascade, less fresh character than is expected in WA; the final tends to be just slightly too bitter.
Good, but not exciting.
2012-08-02, bottle from QFC - Seattle (Ballard), 7-4-7-4-14=36
Hazy amber color. Aroma of toffee, cookies, some hops. Good caramel and toffee flavor, a bit toasted, with cake accents; strong bitterness, with a light lemon cookie trait.
A bit heavy on the flavor profile, but nice overall.
