Description
The Columbus Brewing Company was originally founded in 1830. In 1988, the name was once again chosen to resurrect the proud brewing heritage of its namesake.

Our Brewmaster brings years of experience to the brewery including an apprenticeship with a German-trained Brewmaster, completed the Master Brewers progam at U.C. Davis, and brewing at several breweries throughout North America.

We are dedicated to exploring the flavors of American hops, subtleties of German-style lagers, the intensity of barrel-aged beers & everything in between.

Cask version at Barley’s 5th Annual Mini RAF (04/28/07): This brew is a clear dark amber color with a compact bone white head and spotty lacing. Citrusy hops aroma. Medium body with hops, pine and citrus flavors. Touches of malt here and there too. The finish is hoppy and lingers awhile, and allows some roasted malt flavor to poke through. Pretty good overall.

On tap at the brewpub, sampled at the tapping party. Pours dark brown with a very thin light tan head that has gigantic bubbles. Slick lacing on the glass. The coffee aroma definitely overpowers the smokey character, but does not drown it out completely. Medium-bodied and smooth with a nice coffee flavor, along with smoked malt and caramel. Many Smoked beers taste like licking a barbecue pit but this one keeps it subtle. The finish is smoky and a bit of bitter espresso and hops aftertaste. CBC continues the practice of having much better one-offs than the usual stuff.

On draught at the brewpub. This brew is a lightly murky reddish amber color with a medium light beige head that has fair retention. Thin rings of lacing throughout. The aroma is fruity hops and caramel. Rich-bodied and before knowing what style it was I started off thinking it was a Barleywine and was convinced it was a 2IPA by the end of the glass. There is a strong citrus and resiny hops flavor with a solid malt and caramel backbone. The finish is bitter hops with touches of fruit. Most of CBC’s one-offs are better than their regular offerings and this beer is no exception.

Pours as a very clear dark yellow with a fleeting, thin, white head. A bit of butterscotch is the only detectable aroma (or flavor) that I got. A bit of astringency becomes the finish of this watery, thin brew.

I was a big fan of Hoster’s 90 Shilling Ale when it was around, so seeing another Columbus brewer creating the same style was kind of exciting. The beer is a dark brown-amber with a medium thick light tan head that has pretty good retention. Roasted malt aroma is very prevalent, along with a bit of hops. Medium-bodied with a sweet malty character, plus some caramel and bitter hops. The finish is dry and sweet at first but ending up with a lingering bitterness. Pretty good all around.

Sampled at the Odds and Ends Tasting on 8/16/06: Pours clear golden with a thin off-white head that is gone almost immediately. Minimal lacing. Light sweet honey aroma. Light-bodied with a grainy, off bitter flavor and very little honey. The finish is mildly bitter and short. Could be better.

On draught at the brewpub. Dark brown color with a carbonated look, and a thin and wispy off-white head. This really looks like a glass of cola. Aroma of roasted malt and caramel. Medium-bodied with a nice smoked character, with sweet malt, caramel and hops flavor. There is a touch of hops and bitter chocolate here and there too. The finish is long and sweet, with roasted malt and nuts. As with most of CBC’s seasonals (which tend to be better than their standard offerings), this is good.

On tap at the CBC airport pub. Golden color with a thin off-white head and thin spotty lacing. Lager-ish smell, with mild hops and earthy malt. Light-bodied and crisp with a mildly hoppy flavor that is short-lived. There is a bit of malt in the background too. The finish is dry and lightly bitter. Pretty average but a nice find at the airport.

Bottle pours a deep clear mahogany with a huge fluffy light tan head. This may have been due to the glass being frozen. Sweet slightly acidic almost lemony aromas, not much hops apparent. The malt flavors are pale a bit drap and woody. Lke an old basement but not objectionable. Still not much bittering, fairly unballanced in this area I’d say. Still, tasty and easy to put down. Very lively carbonation and a moderate feel. Thanks to Ohiodad for this one.

Bottle Pours a medium dark clear brown. A fine light tan head and sparce lacing. A dark roasted aroma with a thin slightly sour chocolate hint. Flavors were sweet roasted and slightly metallic. Easy on the fizz as well as the hops. A decent brown. Thanks to Ohiodad for this one.
