Description
“Brewed with a touch of the Tetons”

Albert and Joni Upsher opened Snake River Brewing in 1994. As a former Anheuser Busch distributor in McMinville, Oregon Albert knew the beer business. He took notice of the expanding microbrewery scene in Oregon and decided to open a brewery in his favorite ski town, Jackson Wyoming! Snake River Brewing started as a family owned business, and in 2008 a local family took over the ownership of the brewpub.

Our beginning seemed pretty simple. We bought an old cinder block building that was previously the base of operations for a Coca-Cola distributor. It seemed to be the perfect spot for Wyoming’s first brewpub. We wanted an open industrial look, with lots of light and exposed steel beams. The brewing equipment and wood burning oven would be our artwork.

The concept was to create a restaurant and brewing space that was open to our customers, to draw guests into the process of making beer. We wanted a simple and unpretentious neighborhood watering hole for locals to gather and Jackson Hole tourists to taste beer from the Great State of Wyoming. From the beginning we were determined to create a brewpub building that was both excellent in style architecturally and offered excellent food and beer. We felt strongly about the quality of workmanship in the restaurant, from its beautiful windows and ceiling to its mahogany curved bar.

We decided to plan for quality, substance and longevity. We knew that Jackson Hole’s citizens would judge us on the quality of our beers and food. Our mission statement became- “The world doesn’t need another beer, but a better beer!”

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium deep brown head with excellent retention. Aroma of roasted malt with light sweet chocolate are easily detectable. Taste has a real creamy feel with a good dose of roasted malt and bitter hops. Lack a little something to make this truly great but still very enjoyable.

Best Before October 2005 bottle from Liquor Mart. Consumed on 11/30/05.
Rusty copper colored beer, lightly hazy with just a trace of yeast settling out on the bottom. Some brighter strawberry red hues and an off-white head with fair retention and lacing, eventually receding to cover. In the nose is a lightly sour note, perhaps munich grains, and a hint of dry fruits (unripened berries, unripened nectarines). Dry, husky malts on the end. Smells just a touch metallic at first, but this passes. The flavor has plenty of medium-dry caramel, soily, lightly bitter hops and dry breadiness lingering. Moderately crisp yeast on the finish as well. Carbonation is moderate, pretty average for the style, while it has a lightly watery texture, though it’s not thin by any means. Surprised to find this is 6% abv, as it masks that very well and comes off as a very low gravity, albeit well-malted, session lager. Very even maltiness, not the most complex, but does provide bread, fruits, biscuits and light hops.

An opaque brown beer with a collapsing brown head. The aroma is sweet roasted combined with light notes of malt and chocolate. The flavor is sweet roasted combined with notes of chocolate, and with a dry slightly woody finish. Nice.

Bright golden-amber colour. Light hop aroma - wood, orange. Fairly moderate example of the style - some orange/wood/grapefruit hop contrasting with lightly toasty malt. Low to moderate bitterness.

Bottle Pours a jet black with a small but dense tan head. This settles out quickly leaving sparse chunky lacing. Aroma is a terrific blen of classic Stout flavors. Coffee, molassas, bitter chocolate. Very nice. The coffee flavor is the most up front. Not much hops. Lots of dark roasted flavors. Campfire, charcoal smoke. Feel is very smooth but not too thick. As it warms up a bit, it mellows out more. Burnt smokey aftertaste that is remarkably un-bitter. A great showing from what I though would be just a po-dunk brewer. Gonna have to make sure I give their other offerings a far chance.

This Stout is what I can American or West Coast Stout. The Stout part is excellent, but be prepared for a hop finish uncharacteristic of the British or Irish Stouts.

Lots of hops and malt aroma here. Good balance, with plenty of smoothness. Not a bad APA.

Pours like a glass o' road tar. In other words, it's very dark. Thin and quickly diminishing head. Satisfying coffee/roasted barley aroma, and a nice hops/malt balance made for good drinking. Glad I got a sixer of this.
