16oz bottle, brewed for St. Patricks day, drank in July. Opaque black with stained glass corners. Thin, oily head. Sweet, adjunct-ridden aroma. Sub-par roasty chocolate characteristics. Smooth and drinkable at best, old and artificial at worst. Sweet butterscotch and brown sugar notes. Medium bodied. Sub par all the way, though it improves slightly as it reaches room temperature and becomes more Porter-like.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Hazy dark amber color. Malty aroma, with vanilla oak. Woody caramel flavor, dryish, but mostly alcoholic, with an underlying sourness. The final is quite dry, still with traces of vanilla, with a lightly astringency. A bit too chaotic.

16 fl oz bottle purchased at Gomers in Lenexa, Kansas. Pour is hazy, a bit murky ruby cordovan with pretty settling that builds up a lasting one inch tan head. Very little lacing. Aroma of sweet grassy caramel malt and some mildly smoked peat. Behind that is more straw, and a nice soft cherry fruit. Nice inviting nose. Taste is the fruit sweetness first, followed by grassy caramel toasted malt and finishes with the smoky peat. The smoke is more pronounced than the nose, but is nicely ingrated with the sweetness. Palate is medium to full, lowish carbonation and a mineral grainy finish. The sweetness edges on cloying towards the very back, and becomes more honey than caramel cherry. I enjoyed this one quite a bit, nice beer.

16oz bottle. Burnt buttery chocolate coffer aroma with some discernable heat. Opaque black with an off-white head. The taste is relatively true to style, with some burnt fig underlying pungency. Sort of like the macro version of the Siberian Night. Certainly comes off stronger than it’s actual ABV. Some nice toffee moss nuances as it wams. Tolerable, but a sub par effort.

Bottle. Pours with a hazed toffee colored body and a khaki white, creamy, largish head. Aroma of raisin, peat, butterscotch, vanilla, charred wood, caramel, and copper. Taste is strong in peat, smoke, earthy tones, beef jerky, liquid smoke and metal with a touch of dark fruits and caramel. Light carbonation and full mouthfeel. A bit astringent on the finish with the smokey peat.

16oz bottle. Before I’ve even sipped this one, I give credit to Sprecher for stylistic creativity. Hardcore rum aroma. Different to say the least. Boozy, tastes like a mix drink made with some rail liquor. Sweet and intense, with some alcohol laced fruity pungency. Not many beer qualities at all. No room for hop or grain subtleties, this is pretty much toilet booze. I’d still give an authentic Mbege a shot, but there is no way I’ll ever drink this "product " again.

500ml 20th anniversary bottle. Opaque brown-black color. Minimized off-white head. Artificial raspberry aroma. The extract raspberry really dominates the flavor, which I don’t find to be so unforgivable. Not really much else to mention, raspberry with a light choco-malt balance. Refreshing palate cleanser, I can dig it.
