I was fortunate enough to get the cask-conditioned version of this. Pours a deep, dark brown with a sea-foamy head. Aroma is not strong but it smelled pretty good. Smooth and slightly flat because it was cask-conditioned, I still thoroughly enjoyed this. Roasted malty flavor with a slightly bitter finish. This is a great beer for a cold winter evening.

Homebrewing at its finest. Certainly not Barley's best offering but if their annual Homebrew Fest yields beers of this caliber I am going to make it a point to try them. Similar to an APA in color. Light hops aroma. Satisfyingly rich malt flavor. This beer definitely has character.

Similar to Pyramid's Hefeweizen. This is a light, clean pineapple colored beer with a fruity aroma. Served with a lemon.

Very solid IPA. I am not a big fan of them as a rule but this one I would have again, nice tart hoppy flavor.

Rerate 06/17/03: Tried the cask-conditioned version of this and I liked it a lot. Served in a snifter. Pours a dark orangish-brown color with a thin beige head. Pleasantly heady malt and alcohol aroma. Nice full flavors of malt, caramel and a little spice. This is a very smooth beer, one that goes well with a meal or as a session beer. Worth trying if you can get it while it is in rotation. I still like the Robert Burns more though. 04/08/02 (3.2): Served at room temperature, this is a beer to be taken slowly. Not as good as their Robert Burns, it had a bit of a syrupy texture to it. Still not a bad offering though. A good dessert beer.

Smooth and hoppy, this is an easy-drinking beer. Not the best complement to food but it stands well on its own.

Slightly tart, nicely hopped Stout. Slightly more complex than the Ol' Ron's Oatmeal Stout. A very solid beer.

11/21/2003 Cask: This version of Barley's Pale is dark copper with a very thin light beige head. Very thin lacing as well. The aroma is heady hops with a faint floral aspect lingering as well. Velvety smooth mouthfeel and seemingly low carbonation with a nice hops flavor throughout, along with a nice malt backbone. The finish is a little slick with a lasting hops bite. I like the regular version of this just a little better. 2/10/2002 - Draught: This Columbus classic is a nice rich copper color with a medium light beige head. Thin and slow lacing. Nice hoppy aroma along with a little malt and caramel. The flavor is rich hops throughout, with a bitter hops and fruit aftertaste. A good match with Barley's food. The only drawback is that I could not recommend this over the Columbus Pale Ale as far as locals go.
