Description
In 1824 master brewer Johann Philipp Ledermann came to the small village Döllnitz near Halle and started brewing Gose at Döllnitz Manor. The brewery continued to brew gose till WW 2. After the war the manor brewey was dismantled and the original gose was brewed at several places up till 2015.

Since 2015 we brew our "Original Ritterguts Gose" in close collaboration with Brauerei Reichenbrand in Chemnitz. This small, classic family-brewery fulfills all the requirements necessary for the optimization of our very special brewing process -- in particular the availability of open-fermentation, which we consider a primary component in making a proper gose.

Aroma is slightly fruity with a light pear and citrus ester note. There are moderate coriander phenolics and a light acidity. Light grain and wheat aroma that smells a bit old with a hint of honey. Pours a fairly clear pale golden yellow with a huge pillowy white head. The head steadily recedes but has fairly good retention. It stops receding leaving a thin layer on top. Light lacing is present. Flavor starts with a moderately strong acidity; stronger than I was expecting. There is some sweetness up front and mid palate some notes of citrus and pear. There is a light honey character in the flavor as well. Malt notes are barely present but there is a slight wheat flavor. The salinity is moderate and definitely noticeable mid palate and into the finish. The finish has a light bitterness and moderate acidity to balance the salt. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. It is a refreshing beer and leaves a hint of salt on your lips. Overall this is a really nice beer but it may be showing some age. The salt balances nicely with the acidity and has an excellent palate cleansing effect. A very refreshing beer for a hot day.

Tap at Ma Che, Roma, 21/06/13. Hazed golden amber with a medium sized white head. Nose is light sour fruits, grass, light musty tones. Taste follows, touch of funk, musty, light sour apples, perished fruit notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, a good refreshing palate cleanser.

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours light amber with a white head. Aroma is hinting at citrus with a very light earthy note. Med + body. Flavor is citrus/salt with some definite lactic earthy sour. Quite firm that. It finishes lactic earthy. Nice variation on Belgian earthiness. Finishes tart with salt to put it another way.

Pour a pale orange. Quite cloudy, though that’s not exactly a surprise after following the label’s advice to stir up the yeast before pouring. Foamy white head. Decent retention. Lemony lactic-forward aroma. Some coriander and brine. Some nice fruity malt flavors in the background - apricot and blackberry. Taste is lactic tart with some nice spice and fruit flavors and a salty undercurrent. It’s quite yogurty lactic. Like unsweetened yogurt mixed with lemon rind. Little to no malt sweetness and absolutely no hop character. Light to medium mouthfeel. There’s a little body to the beer, but it’s pretty crisp. The lack of malt sweetness makes the beer feel quite clean. Fun beer. Always nice to find a gose. This would be a fun beer to pair with food.

17/03/2013 Ma che siete venuti a fà (tap). Dorata, pallida, limpida, schiuma abbondante e persistente.

Max’s Taphouse, Baltimore, tap: Pours hazy yellow with a white head. Aroma is lemon, wheat, and some peculiar yeast. Taste is slightly soured. The salt is pretty minimal, but noticeable. There is a nice amount of spice. Ridiculously easy to chug. A good gose, with a good balance.

Draft at Churchkey. Aroma was some slight fruity citrus notes, some yeast notes, a touch of tart character to this one. I didn’t really get as much salt in the aroma as I did the flavor. A nice note to it that reminded me of being a few miles away from the beach. Pretty darn enjoyable.
