Description
We started out in 1996 as a small group of San Diego home brewers who simply wanted to make a better beer. In our exploration, we became obsessed with ingredients—tinkering, testing and tasting to find the perfect balance of taste and aroma. That adventurous spirit leads to award-winning beers in classic and unique styles while challenging our own tastes and expanding yours.
We’re proud of our San Diego hometown, our employees, our beers, and our fans. We think of our employees as family, and you, our fans, as extended family. You’ll see us use #BPPROUD as a badge of pride and a way to further connect with our beer loving community.

Pours deep clear amber into a snifter. Off-white head pancakes and recedes to spot surface leaving slight spiders. Strong pine resin and grapefruit aromas. Sweet full honey upfront turning crisp then syrupy. Lasting resin finish. A sipper.

Pours deep dark with amber edges and thin mocha head. The aroma is roasty malts mixing with molasses, mild chocolate and mild amounts of coffee. The taste is rich and chewy with malts. It then becomes mildly coffee like and moving in the direction of molasses, chocolate and a sense of vanilla. Into the finish mild coffee and mild malt astringency round out the experience.

Bottle, at LCRBM 2008, ’s Hertogenbosch, Netherlands
Black body with a brown head. Strong aroma of deep malts with some spicy complexity. Great, robust aroma. Moderately sweet, lightly bitter flavour. Heavily carbonated. Good balance. Strong malty mouthfeel with a good complexity to make it interesting, but it is not overwhelming by complexity. Steady beer.

the only thing i dont like about this beer is the palate, everything else is great. it tastes exactly as an IPA should, some pine, some citrus, a lot of hops, a little malty, perfect, but just a little strong on the palate.

courtesy of retorp. Pours pitch black with golden/beige head. Aroma of caramel malts with faint hops. Taste, malty and spicy with notes of hops. Light roasted malts coffee with chocolate and cocoa powder for a light bitter palate and finish. Caramel lingers for a nice sugary mouthfeel.

Sampled at Toronado 2009 Barleywine Festival. Pours clear brilliant amber with thin tan head. The aroma seems a bit musty with dusty oak, a bit of sweet brandy, then figs and raisins. The taste begins much the same with smooth brandy booze that slowly becomes somewhat harsh to go along with oak notes. Toward the finish dark fruity esters rise up with cherries, raisins and prunes. Nice brew.
