550 yen real ale at Temma Beer Belly. It poured a dark honey brown with an off-white head. No discernible aroma, nice mild sweet malty taste with a hint of bitterness. Great full body for a smooth mouthfeel, easy to drink. Almost no carbonation which jibes with what I remember of real ales.

On tap at Temma Beer Belly. It pours a classic inky black with a tan head. Aroma of caramel, chocolate with a hint of coffee. The flavor is slightly roasted or smokey sweet dark malts with a bit of a bitter coffee finish. Light body for the style but easy to drink.

Acidic, roasted scent, coffee as well, way too acidic. Acidic, roasted, thin taste, not pleasant. Thin mouthfeel, low bitterness.Did not finish my pour.

I had wanted to try this on tap at Craft Beer Base’s IPA event in Osaka but they never got around to that keg >_< So I was happy to grab a taste at El Nubichinom in Yokohama. It is a great looking IPA with a west coast aroma profile of pine & citrus. Wow, it was quite bitter for a Japanese IPA. An astringeant mouth-puckering beer, not so balanced with mostly pine coming through. Decent on a hot day though.

Tap at Beer Republic, Yokohama. Black colour with a small beige head. Slightly smoked flavour of chocolate, plum. A bit weak bodied. Flavour is rather bitter, chocolate.

Tap at Watering Hole, Tokyo. Orange colour with a white head full of bubble holes. Aroma of caramel, citrus. Flavour is flowery, citrus, bitter.

Draught at Tadg’s. Huge spice nose, chocolate, fruit, cloves. Slightly sweet, spicy flaovr, chocolate, light fruit, very spicy. Cloves and maybe cinnamon? Dry finish that is a bit astringent from the spices. Not really balanced.

A bottle from Asahiya, a nice looking dark beer with cloves & coriander. A smokey aroma with chocolate/coffee followed by the spicy herbs. It had a really nice mouthfeel and was pleasent to drink. I’d definitely have this again! This beer starts with the malts and ends with the spices. I like North Island’s Coriander Black a bit better but this is a really nice spicy dark beer~!
