Draught at the Tanabata Beer Festa Toyama, 2010. Real Ale version. Medium brown. Soft, earthy hop aroma with chocolate and a touch of citrus. Bitter, creamy flavor with chocolate malts, slight fruits and big bitterness. Alcohol present. Nice restrained fruitiness. Really bitter and earthy. Good. Not too sweet.

Draught at Craft Beer Live, Namba May 23, 2010. Pitch black with not a single bubble or bit of foam at all. Completely flat. Very roasty aroma with coffee and a bit of smoke, not super smokey, but some bacon in there. A little bit light in the palate, quite burnt and roasty, a little bit of smoky bacon, coffee. Ok, tasty, but not a whole lot of smoke. Seems experimental and not quite perfected. Bitterness from the roasted grains is a bit too extreme, a bit too much. This could be quite interesting if they get the carbonation right and get a bit more body in there. Looking forward to a re-rate.

Deep golden color, chalk white head. Light toasty, grassy hoppy nose. Full bodied, well balanced. Grassy hops just shine, with excellent toasty backbone. Mildly sweet. Dry bitter finish. Superb superb. Hops just sit in the mouth. Wow! Best beer from minoh hands down. Only fault is alcohol is a bit strong at the end.

Draught at Beer Belly. Rich malt and citrus hop aromas. Seems like there’s some cascade in there. Deep, dark golden color. Fruity flavor, sweet, with nice grains, very rich and smooth, with a bit of citrus and caramel. Tasty and rich; very smooth and full. A darn good lager, though not really a pils at all. It’s too strong, too sweet, and the hops are quite different. Something like a South German or Austrian Spezial.

Real ale at Beer Belly Edobori. Seems to have been aged already 6 months. Pitch black like a stout, with a beautiful tan head and fine lines of bubbles rising to the top. Crazy color for the name but lovely. Citrus aroma, sour, with cherries. A bit like Sprite with root beer added. Quite sour flavor, very fruity with a lot of sweetness as well. Cherries, caramel, roasted malt. Very interesting. I would say it needs refinement, and should probably be aged another year. Quite young feeling, but fun and definitely would be a good thing to work on. They should change the name, however, because there is nothing lambic about it. It is a sour ale.

Handpump at Beer Belly. Nice reddish-copper color. Nice hoppy aroma, with dark fruit, citrus, caramel, and Belgian yeast. Spicy, fruity, with a tingly, prickly, bitter hop finish. Very interesting finish, and good hoppiness for a Belgian style. A great session beer.

Draught at McLaughlin’s. Cloudy dark gold with a fine, thick head. Sour peach aroma, banana, too much diacetyl. Sweet and buttery. Complicated more than complex. Rich and too creamy and candy-like. Somewhat sloppy and undefined. Heard that the last keg was better with less diacetyl.

Real Ale at the Craft Beer Festival in Ichinoseki, Iwate. Very fruit, spicy aroma, and a nice, glowing red color. Very spicy flavor from the Belgian yeast. Good malt. Well done, interesting take on a Belgian but I would give it more alcohol.

Handpump at Q-Brick. Dark brown, almost black, with a thin, fine head. Spicy, rich caramel aroma, with a bit of dark fruit. Sweet, creamy flavor. Huge caramel, but with a roasty, bitter finish. Really flavorful, with a nice English hop flavor in the background. Silky smooth with a touch of something sour. Very nice and well satisfying, though it is more of a winter beer than a summer one!
