Real ale at Beer Belly Tenma. Spicy snasho nose. Caramel and sansho flavor, creamy, spicy, pppery finish. Quite nice, and much better than the one I had a few years back. From the hand pump at Qbrick, Real Ale Month 2008: 6/3/3/4/3. A test run, it seems. Loaded with Sansho, which I guess is Sechuan Pepper. The beer was overcome completely. Flavors of sansho, but even more of pepper and ginger. Some chemical taste as well. Spice way overdone. Nice palate, though.

On tap at the Minoh brewery anniversary party, May 2008. Slightly ruby color. Sweet, grape flavor clashing with the beer. Too sweet and too complicated without being balanced and complex. reminds me of Champale or a wine cooler. Not for me.

On tap at Beer Belly. Brilliant, cloudy, glowing golden color. Lightest weizen bock I have seen. Very fragrant of bananas and spices. Very sweet, rich, full flavor. Tons of bananas. Dessert-like. Slightly overpowering if you are not ready for the sweet richness, but a great nightcap.

Barrel aged version at the Brewer Anniversary, May 2008. Fresh, creamy type stout with little roasted bitterness. Strong, sweet, and very well done. Smooth and mellow, but big flavor. Much more mature than the bottle. Really nice.

Real Ale from the Handpump. Coffee big time. Unabashed. This was a very interesting stout, although when I tried it I had trouble tasting the beer for the coffee. Intense coffee flavors seem to rule everything. Nice body, nice looking, decent sweetness, but too much coffee for me. New rating, much better balanced, with hazelnut coffee, good notes of chocolate and nuts, well balanced.

On tap at Beer Belly Edobori. This has gotten much better recently. Cloudy, glowing golden color. Now it is clearly in the Bohemian style, with biggish malt, decent hops, and a buttery quality. Rich, well balanced, good hops. A great session beer, though quality can be variable.

On tap at Beer Belly Edobori. They have stepped it up a notch lately. Beautiful glistening black color with a full head. Thick and rich dark malt, with chocolate, caramel, and a touch of coffee. Fresh, tasty, but not cloying. Very well balanced dark beer.

On tap at Beer Belly Edobori. Light hops, thick, rich caramel malts, some fruit. Very good, though not too hoppy. Amber color, with amberish, slightly earthy malts. Really needs more hops.

Hand pump at Beer Belly Higobashi. Keeps getting rich and more flavorful. Smooth and rich, with more of the same flavors listed last time. Becoming a top quality stout. Previous rating: Aroma of roasted barley, dark chocolate and cafe au lait. Rich and creamy, decent coffee and chocolate flavors, well roasted. Very nice, smooth body on the handpump. Seems to be getting better every time I have it. 7/3/7/4/15

Pitch black color. Dark brown head. Sweet malty nose with distinctive coffee and dark chocolate notes. This is one of those sweet coffee stouts where its all about the malty sweetness and coffee. Hops are barely noticable. Still somewhat rather intense coffee flavors and enjoyable, but like most coffee stouts, one is enough. Would have again, especially in the morning.
