Description
Gwenaël Michel, originally from Miquelon, and his partner, Laura Bertrand, from France, are proving that a simple hobby can lead to great things: in 2017, after years of brewing beer for their own consumption and to share with friends, the couple decided to launch their own craft beer business. This time, they are delighting beer lovers throughout the archipelago, as well as tourists and visitors.
Like so many young people that L’Heure de l’Est meets across the region, Gwenaël and Laura want to create something new and innovative in their homeland, where they have chosen to live, work, and raise a family. In their case, it’s the village of Miquelon, population 700, the only place in the archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon with a small agri-food sector. Laura brews full-time, and Gwenaël helps part-time since he's chosen to keep his job, for now.

Bottle from the Bootlegger bar in St Pierre. Big rich honey maltiness with some earthy lemony spice and a hint of astringency to counter. Not too shabby.

Bottle from the store in St. Pierre enjoyed in the hotel room. Citrus and pine with a solid bready backbone, it has a real 90s ipa feel to it. Clean and pretty tasty. Oddly they put a "best by" date on their bottles a year out.

Bottle. Slightly hazy orange-golden, larger and lasting white head. Lovely nose, peach and pines, slight earth and spices. Medium bitterness, a bit more herbal and straightforward. Dry finish and lasting aftertaste. Lighter body. More oldschool IPA.

Bottle 33cl. from a bottle shop in Saint Pierre. Cloudy amber colour, good frothy off-white head, half-way lasting, light lacing. Aroma sweet malt, caramel, yeast. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, bit toasty malty, caramel, toffee. Plus medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, malty sweetbitter aftertaste, well-made, good. You would't expect to find such a good triple-style beer at such a remote place!

Bottle 33cl from a bottle shop in St Pierre poured into a tumbler @my hotel in Ottawa (what surprise they have tumblers!). Hazy pale golden color, fair frothy off-white to white head, slowly diminishing, light lacing. Aroma wheat, coriander, lemon grass, some cloves. Taste medium sweet, light bitter and sourish notes, malty, coriander, touch of cloves, lemon peel. Medium body, watery to oily texture, soft carbonation, aftertaste as in taste, spices linger on, perhaps not very clean but has character, nice.
