Bitter hints of hops pervade the otherwise caramely, malty aroma. Pours a dark straw color, with a thin white head. Flavor is sugary and caramely with a slight bready tone and bitter hops kick. Not quite an IPA, and not quite a barleywine, Avery Ten stakes out its own claim and delivers with a decent success rate.

Another wit, what a treat! I have to admit I was quite impressed by White Rascal's appearance: very pale yellow with a thin white head, the ale looked like the signature of refreshment. But, as the librarians and cantankerous scribes tell us, do not judge a beer by its hue! The flavor was overwhelmed by coriander, making the wheat and orange peel accents an afterthought. I prefer a yeastier, wheatier witbier with just a touch of spice. If Avery toned down the spice, this could become a classic.

This is kind of the kid brother to The Czar but it is a decent Dry Stout. Pours a dark brown (but not opaque) with a dark red halo. Aroma is strong roasted coffee with a little chocolate in the background. Rich with a big coffee presence, along with a little malt and chocolate. Finish is very dry and toasty with a light hops zing. Well-balanced and easy to drink.

Very dark chestnut with red shine. Slight, light-brown head. Nose of grapes, raisins, vineous and hops. With warming up, there follows a smell of kaffirlime (peel, as in Thai cuisine). Taste are grapes, tobacco, some bitter chocolate,and lots of hops, but well balanced with dark malts. Very chewy mouthfeel. Retronasal gives nice tobacco-and-hops, long, but after a quite long time, a new impression of sweet chocolate emerges. What impresses me most in this beer is its very succeeded balance.

Colour: yellow with gold-copper shine throughout, hints of Chablislike green; thick white, luxurious head but disappearing rather fast. Nose: full-hoppy aroma, not metallic or overpowering, slight wet cardboard taint, also DMS (?) Taste: Amazingly nice hoppy taste, much more flavour than real bitter taste; hops seem more UK than USA character. Aftertaste: retronasal aromas of cypress, crisp finish. each gulp gives renewed helping of fresh hops, always with this cypresslike flavouring. Hops keep lingering at the tonguesides. This beer is in many aspects an epitomizing of American IPA, were it not for the character of the hops. Very drinkable for all its hoppiness.

This is very WWS-ish, but much less sweet. Pours a dark black, thick, with low carbonation. Smells like plums, brown sugar and dates. Initially, the flavor is spicy, then the sweetness, currants, toffee. Spice comes back again in the finish. This stuff coats the inside of the mouth. I can see the barely wine like character that some have said this exhibits. This is quite a unique imperial stout. I wish I could get this here. Thanks brewbandit!

2002 Bottle: I could tongue kiss Governor Bob Taft for making beers like this available in Ohio. Pours black as octopus ink with a slight ruby halo. Very thin beige head and thin lacing. Yummy aroma of coffee, chocolate, toffee and malt that gets even better throughout the glass. Flavor is an interesting concoction of coffee, chocolate, tart soy sauce, and alcohol. Perfect hops counterbalance in the finish. I don't even know how this bottle disappeared so fast but I want another.

Golden coloured beer if i've ever seen golden, with a dense white head. Smells of citrus, sweet pineapple and very fragrant hops. A very nice aroma, and definately mouth-watering. Piney in the hops and sweet with the malt. Medium-bodied; The tates lasts for a long-time and the hops are the primary flavour (which they should be). Aftertaste full of the piney hops and bitter the mouth...a real treat for Hop-heads like me! Overall one of the better American IPAs. Pick one up if you can find it! Even though i've had this beer before, I still enjoy posting new reviews for the same beer. I bougtht this single 12 ounce bottle at Chevy Chase Wines & Spirits in Washington, D.C. I sampled this beer on 30-August-2003. Rating for this tasting: 9,4,9,4,16. Previous Tasting:
