Description
The story of Bear Republic, like most other craft brewers, begins with homebrewing. It was the spark for our passion to create quality, hand-crafted beers. We are a family-owned brewery, located in the heart of Sonoma County, California. The company was established by the Norgrove family in 1995, with Richard G. Norgrove as brewmaster.

After 11 years of rapid growth, we opened our Factory 5 brewery in Cloverdale, California, where we brew and package all our beer that goes to market. We hand select our ingredients for each batch, the grains and hops we use are chosen for their unique characteristics and the recipes and formulations are patiently developed over time. Many recipes start as a home-brew and then develop into the commercial beer available in many retail outlets today. We pride ourselves in using our established methods while always looking to improve efficiencies and techniques that allow us to provide quality beer to share with the world.

Beginning 2023 thw brewery was acquired by Drake’s Brewing.

Stunningly beautiful deep purple-burgundy red colour with a dense yellowish head, leaving lace. Powerful American hops nose, piney, and dry hop bails jumping out of the glass. Maybe also slightly cheesy, oxydized hops. The aroma is so powerful that the taste seems almost lame in comparison. Almost, as there’s a lot going on: perfumey hops, decent bitterness, soft sweet cakes. Bit of caramel. Very little body, caramel can’t give body, neither can hops. It’s a nice drinker that unfortunatley want to present itself as a BIG’UN. Which it isn’t.

Pour is obviously red with a small white head. Aroma is a nice dose of oliy hops with heaping of malts. Flavor is much the same. Dark malts giving the brew a great thick mouthfeel. Hops also show up and give it a nice crisp and fruity flavor. A very interisting brew for a brewer that puts out excellent stuff.

Bottle. Dark body with dark brown head. Heavenly smell of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, licorice and cascade hops. A well balanced flavor of the same elements as the aroma. Long warming aftertaste.

22 oz. Nice dark amber color, with light tan head. Citrus flavor with some caramel. Smooth, and a nice finish, where you can taste the hoppy flavor of the beverage.

Bottle from Hogtownharry: Poured a dark amber color ale with huge foamy off-white heat with great retention and lacing. Aroma of citrus hops with good malt backbone is very interesting. Taste is a mix between semi-sweet caramel malt with some c-hops that provide a bitter finish. Rye is quite hard to distinguish and doesn’t seem to provide that much in the overall mix. Body is slightly above average and alcohol is well hidden. Very well done overall but definitely not a style (American strong ale) that really excite me.

22 oz bottle. Great, just great. Very hoppy, and I mean very hoppy. Crisp, clean, citrus and has a great finish and a fantastic aftertaste.

(Bottle 65 cl) Pours a dark amber with tiny impurities. and a creamy, off-white head leaving some laces. Hoppy, citrusy nose. Medium body with some caramel and a dominance of fresh, grapefruitish aroma hops. Quite some bitterness. 300406

Draft. Amber beer with a thin off-white head. Rich spicey, malty flavor with lots of caramelization. Caramel malt aroma with some earthiness. Hops present and backing, but don’t stand out. This just didn’t do it for me and I’m surprised to see so many high rankings. It’s just a lof of malty sweetness balanced with hops - there’s not a lot of complexity here and it gets tiring.
