Description
The story of Bear Republic, like most other craft brewers, begins with homebrewing. It was the spark for our passion to create quality, hand-crafted beers. We are a family-owned brewery, located in the heart of Sonoma County, California. The company was established by the Norgrove family in 1995, with Richard G. Norgrove as brewmaster.

After 11 years of rapid growth, we opened our Factory 5 brewery in Cloverdale, California, where we brew and package all our beer that goes to market. We hand select our ingredients for each batch, the grains and hops we use are chosen for their unique characteristics and the recipes and formulations are patiently developed over time. Many recipes start as a home-brew and then develop into the commercial beer available in many retail outlets today. We pride ourselves in using our established methods while always looking to improve efficiencies and techniques that allow us to provide quality beer to share with the world.

Beginning 2023 thw brewery was acquired by Drake’s Brewing.

35cl Blik van Beer Republic. Licht mistig goudgele kleur, witte kraag. Hars, citrus, wat grapefruit, citrusschil, caramel, wat dennen, super oldskool en bitter en daarom alleen al fantastisch. Glad mondgevoel, medium body. Top.

#12 Beer Republic advent calendar. 355ml can. Unclear golden, big fluffy head. Lots of resin and pine, grapefruit zest, stinging herbal hops, cough syrup, maple syrup, pine honey, skunk. Hoppy herbal bitterness, malty sweetness. Full bodied, oily texture, soft to lively carbonated, intense hoppy bitter finish. A very hop-focused, intense and resinous West Coast IPA, really good!

In der Nase Frucht und Wald, im Trunk erdig, Pinien, harzig, spät bitter, ganz okay. Endlich mal wieder kein Frucht-IPA.

Poured from 473mL can (bb 02/26/22). Black with tan head. Aroma of roast malt and a bit of licorice. Taste of roast malt and cocoa with a bit of molasses and a hint of licorice, light alcohol on the finish. Roastiness lingers here and the body is medium-light. Not bad, but leaves you desiring a better overall balance. Has a bit of soy sauce when it's warm.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Dark brown colour, near black. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, carboard, ass. Full odied, moderately sweet, prominent roastiness, some earthy notes (coffee, green pepper), maybe cocoa; and warming alcohol; light smoke, light spirit.
It's good and bold, there's a lot going on here, but a bit too roasty in the finish for me.

16oz at Alex's. Appearance: brown with a beige head. Aroma: dark fruits, some roasted malts. Taste: along the same lines, some chocolate and fruity notes, roasty, moderately sweet. Overall: the roastiness is what I would like to get rid of in this beer with adding some more body as well.

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark gold with a nice white head. Aroma is indeed orange and tangerine with some lite caramel in support. Approaching full bodied - carbonation is large. Flavor is tangerine and orange with a lot of malt support - light malt - but somewhat caramel. Strong flavor. Juicy, yet not too sweet. Definitely very hoppy and very bitter. West Coast - but sort of intense old school. Nice drink it is.

473mL can, pours jet black with a small brown head. Aroma is intense, with loads of roasted malt, liquorice, molasses and unsweetened dark cocoa. Flavour more or less follows suit, with intense roasted malt, liquorice and molasses. The hops contribute to the assertiveness, convincing well with the high roast character. I don't get much if any discernible chocolate, so this seems very similar to the regular Baba Yaga. A bit harsh but this is really tasty.
