Description
The story of Bear Republic, like most other craft brewers, begins with homebrewing. It was the spark for our passion to create quality, hand-crafted beers. We are a family-owned brewery, located in the heart of Sonoma County, California. The company was established by the Norgrove family in 1995, with Richard G. Norgrove as brewmaster.

After 11 years of rapid growth, we opened our Factory 5 brewery in Cloverdale, California, where we brew and package all our beer that goes to market. We hand select our ingredients for each batch, the grains and hops we use are chosen for their unique characteristics and the recipes and formulations are patiently developed over time. Many recipes start as a home-brew and then develop into the commercial beer available in many retail outlets today. We pride ourselves in using our established methods while always looking to improve efficiencies and techniques that allow us to provide quality beer to share with the world.

Beginning 2023 thw brewery was acquired by Drake’s Brewing.

Poured from 473mL can (bb 09/11/21). Hazy golden orange with off-white head. Fairly malty, mild citrus hops, touch of tropical, and a bit of resin on the finish. Would probably be great fresh, but this can is a bit old.

Kind of a murkyish looking body with a thick head. Doesn't look great. The aroma is full of chewy - some minty sort of hops, a bit of pine, and some chewy malts. On the palate, more in the pine family but again some orangey stuff, maybe mint. Chewy and a bit yeasty, too, with a hit of alcohol. It's not really that much of a winner for me...bit too yeasty all told, murks up the malt and even the hops feel like they're starting to fade.

Can. Dark brown. Thin head. Lots of bitterness and molasses, coffee all over this as well. Sticky sugars and boozy richness. Got that old school, pre-pastry imperial stout vibe, and I like it.

Poured from 473mL can (bb 09/11/21). Hazy orange gold with medium beige head. Chewy light caramel and bread malt base with pine hops and mild dankness. The age does play a factor in this... but still very good.

Can, courtesy of Riley
Hazy, the colour of a warm sun (golden bright), medium sized head. Some arom aof refined sugar, malt, piney hops (not much). Good body structure, moderate sweetness without excess, some husky and bready malt base (it's as strong as it can be, for not getting in the way of the hops); the hopping is resinous, but not sharpy-piney, and there is even a bit of vegetable bitterness; definitively tastes quite old.
Still enjoyable, and probably was very good when fresh.

473mL can, best before, Sept 2021, pours a hazy golden with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out plenty of dank, piney hops in wonderful west coast fashion, with some chewy resins, and just enough caramel malt to balance. Flavour is no less impressive, with lots of piney hops, lots of resins, moderate dankness, and perfect caramely malt balance. It's perhaps a bit old, but it stands up. Excellent.

On tap at Bear Republic - Rohnert Park, pours jet black with a small tan head. Nose is loaded with intense roast, wood, and a fair wallop of resinous hops. Flavour has a lot of depth, with intense roasted malt, lots of wood, and intense piney hops to back. Extremely intense flavour profile, with a lot of wood and roast, finishing almost fruity and somewhat hoppy. Very good.

On tap at Bear Republic - Rohnert Park, pours a clear pale golden with a small white head. Aroma is musty and earthy, with tired hops, some sweat socks, and bready notes. Flavour is a little better in the hop expression, with a mix of earthy and resinous hops upfront, and backed by bready malt. The hops still have that sweaty, musty character, making it seems like it's not the freshest or that the hop expression is just not that great.

On tap at Bear Republic - Rohnert Park, pours a clear bright golden amber with a small white head. Aroma reveals rustic saison yeast, with moderate bretty funk, and doughy malt. Flavour is funky, with lots of wild yeast, musty bretty notes, and dusty bread malt. Balanced and nicely incorporating of the brett. Good stuff.

On tap at Bear Republic - Rohnert Park, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Nose is dank, with lots of piney hops, rich resinous hops, and just enough malt sweetness to back. Flavour is robust, full of dank piney hops, truckloads of resinous hop oils, and just enough caramel malt sweetness to back. Beautiful old school west coast double IPA, with ample hopping, assertive but bearable bitterness, and a perfect malt backbone. Excellent.
