Brouwerij Serafijn

Client Brewer in Heist-op-den-Berg, Antwerp, Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: Huisbrouwerij Achilles - Out of business

Established in 1999

Description
The microbrewery is founded by Achilles Van de Moer on the passion for special beers. After 7 years of trials with different beers, the decision to start a microbrewery in Itegem was made in 1999. The brand name of beers is “Serafijn”. All beers are high fermentation brews, with second fermentation in the bottle. Most of the beers are contract brewed, but some of them are also brewed at their own location.

In 2015 Achilles became part of Caupona bvba (of the Prik & Tik stores in Heist-op-den-Berg and Herselt). The brewery is now called ''Brouwerij Serafijn.'' That is the new company in Heist that houses the Serafijn beers. The former microbrewery in Itegem has been dismantled.

The beer is now brewed at the Pirlot brewery in Zandhoven.

Bottled. Muddy pale orange. Sweet and peppery with notes of melon. Clean, fairly hard malt profile. Am I imagining the chili burn?

The aroma is very sweet distinct fruity with notes of papaya, yeast, and chestnuts. The color is between orange and amber and even though I poured it very carefully slightly hazy. It has beutiful huge off-white head though collapsing. The flavor is somewhat thin compared to the aroma and the alcohol content. The flavor contains notes of corriander and other undistinquisable spices though not any I'd like in a beer - which makes it rather weird. This is not a beer for me.

An unclear orange beer. The aroma is spicy with notes of cloves. The flavor is of cloves, wheat malt and rather perfumated. An OK beer.

Golden to orange color; giant head. Very nice Tripel aroma, dry, spicy, but also fruity (citrus fruits). Good body, sweeter than usual, with a good mix of malt, spices, fruits. Not complex, but very pleasant. Thanks to Philippe (BOV) for this trade.

Slight gushing to exaggerated creamy-white head, disappearing. Dark orange coloured beer, full of flunky floating fiddlebits - becomes obscene at the end of the bottle. Nice herbal nose of garden weeds or the contents of the garden mowersack. Faint hops. Sweet, slightly bitter taste. Sweet is absolutely liquorice and some candi sugar. Spicey, citrussy (why yes - obvious). More bitter retronasal, vaguely ginger, very yeasty. Medium bodied, quite dry. Pearly - not fizzy. Not bad, a tad stereotypic - but I don't think this beer is meant for ageing. More than a year from its sell-by date, this sample is already showing signs of tiring. Or was it badly kept at the shop?

Yellow and really hazy with creamy head. Deep fruity, estery winegum aroma. Sweet and malty with just a hint of wheat flavour, and no trace of the traditional witbier spices. Instead it is well hopped with notes of butterscotch and a grassy finish. A complex, well balanced and slighly unusual beer.

At 6.2 this is a try to do it a little different. Especially the taste is, indeed; different: an immediate impression of hopbitter, not too much spiciness, but a dissapointing sweetish aftertaste of cornflake or maize. Another Belgian wheat, after all.

Ruby coloured and cloudy . Acidic nose. Sweet and sugary. Malty with velvetty mouthfeel and clean finish with low bitterness. Very mild and dangerously drinkable.
