Description
in 1842 Thomas Dixon Ridley built his brewery on the banks of the River Chelmer. It was here that the Ridleys’ great tradition of brewing was born. The brewery thrived and Ridley’s beer was enjoyed at inns from Southend to Saffron Walden. Over the next 163 years six generations of Ridleys honed their skills and perfected their palettes to bring the people of Essex the best local brews, until the brewery was sold in 2005. In 2012 Nelion Ridley takes up the mantle once more, and with his craft brewery ‘Bishop Nick’, is devoted to keeping Essex ales sacred.

Bottle. Deep brownish black colour with a mediumsized foamy beigeish brown head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is ashes, chocolate, mild liquorice and some toasted tones. Flavour is kind of ashy, some chocolate, mild liquorice and a bit herbal and grassy tones. A bit too ashy for my likes. Most likely too pale malts for getting the colour right and corrected with roasted barley or something like that...

Almost clear burnished gold beer, good bubbly cream colour head. Palate is airy and mildly dry, good fine minerally carbonation. Smooth malts, a light creamy sweetness. The quartet of British hops deliver a light but crisp pine into a really nice orchard and berry fruits melange. Light but ripe pear and apple into clear blackberry, touch of raspberry and even a trace of strawberry. Looking for Jester lime, but the berry vibe is too strident to unmask it. Light crisp finish. Lovely gold. The UK hops are delivered with aplomb. I love UK hops. When will someone start using these wonderful nuggets to brew big IPAs and DIPAs? Anyway, enough ranting, this is crisp and clean brew with wonderful UK hop character, that I could drink all night and, uncharacteristically, not be wobbly! Sterling work!

Almost clear gold beer, small bubbly white head. Palate is light, a very mild dryness and a good fine minerally crispness. Light malts, a thin creamy sweetness, whisper of clean grain. Crisp cooling pine into thin but juicy Azacca citrus, orange and mandarin, trace of lemon. Yes there is a touch of mango on the finish, something I've not picked up from this hop before. Another refreshing clean brew from the BN with modern hopping. More hops would be good of course.

Almost clear gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light, mildly dry and has a good fine minerally crispness. Thinnish malts, but enough for a 4.4% Gold. Crisp pine leading to bright but bitterish C hops, citrus peel bitterness. More crisp pine and a little hop nibble on the snappy finish. A little modern Mosaic candy fruits coming through very late on. Clean, tasty and refreshing and thus very drinkable.

Almost clear gold beer, small bubbly pale cream colour head. Smooth palate, mildly dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Light malts, mildly sweet, trace of grain but normal for a brew like this. Jester, Olicana and Godiva hops bring light smooth pine into that typical modern English soft hop orchard fruits, a little crystallised fruits as well. Comes together well into a light dry finish. Very nice. Of course, I would like an 8.5% dipa version with 5 times of many hops but this is a very quaffable light gold.

Clear gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Smooth palate, semi dry, decent fine minerally carbonation. Light smooth malts, a light creamy sweetness, mild biscuit. Smooth pine into decent almost candyish citrus, a mild floral note. Not getting any Nelson grape, but I really wasn't expecting any. But a nice beer overall, clean and refreshing.
