Description
Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.

We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.

In hops we trust!

Dark brown color, small steady brownish color. Piney licorice aroma. Nice fresh nose. Medium-bodied. Spruce, salt, licorice in the flavor. Lingering bitterness. Good bitterness and toastyness, needs perhaps more malt background.

Bottle from trade with Marduk (Many Thanks!). Bardzo dobre IPA z Estonii. Piekna pomaranczowa barwa jasna i trwala piana sredniej wielkosci. Mocno metne, slodowe i zarazem goryczkowe. Zapach cytrusow i innych tropikalnych owocow. Troche slodkosci arbuza oraz chlebowa, swierzo wypieczona skorka. Wszystko smacznie sie uzupelnia w jedna ogolna calosc. Polecam

Bottle from trade with Marduk (Many Thanks!). Dobre zytnie piwo. Slodowe glebokie i tresciwe. Kolor metny drozdzowy. Smak chlebowy i przepelniony biszkoptami. Zbozowy totalnie, slodowosc wysoka ale chmiele takze tu sa obecne i to dosc wyraznie. Wspaniale tworza calosc i uzupelniaja, a raczej tonuja potezna slodowosc piwa. Piana spora i niebywale trwala. Fajna artystyczna etykieta.

0,33L bottle, batch 009. Pours slightly hazy golden with white head. The head stays for a moment. Aroma is hoppy, sour, tropical fruits, citrus, and wheat. Taste is sour and mildly sweet, wheat, citrus, tropical fruits, and malt. Finish is intense fruity bitter. Overall: very nice hoppy brew. Update: many different batches. When it’s good it’s 3.6 easily, when it’s not really good, it’s more like 3.0. I actually prefered the earlier batches (4.9%), so rating lowered from 3.6 to 3.3. --- Beer aliased from original tick of Permissionless on 29 Oct 2023 at 19:05 - Score: 6. 0,33L bottle, batch 007. Pours very deep red almost black with tan head. The head stays. Aroma is roast, berries, fruits, and some sweetness. Taste is roast, berries, fruits, citrus, and pine. Finish is lingering intense dry and resin bitter with some berries. Overall: really nice brew. Update: bottle from the new batch and tap from the same batch at Speakeasy. Before reading Phil’s review, I thought I just remembered it wrong, but the new batch seems a lot different. More blueberries, more intense roast, less balance between components. For some reason it reminds me a lot Põhjala’s other BIPA "Ulg". Tap version was slightly better than the bottle, but still nowhere near as good as the first batch. Rating for the new batch: 7:5:7:3:13=3.5

Draught @ Koht
Aroma is quite what this promises to be: lots of cocoa with some spicy chili tones. Flavour has stinging chili notes and sweet’n’sticky cocoa malt. Finishes with moderate afterburner of chili. Just like Slottskällans Imperial Stout with chili added. Unfortunately this starts to get some vegetable-like notes typical to chili beers at the middle of the glass. Hides the ABV very well. A beer not for everyone, but if you like chili you should give it a go. If you can find it somewhere...

Draught @ Pudel
Aroma is hoppy with resiny tones and licorice. Flavour is hoppy and somewhsomewhat woody with gooseberry bush, grapefruit and licorice. Also some distant tobacco & raspberry tones. Finishes with lingering hops. A light BIPA on the hoppy side, nice and balanced.
