Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.
We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.

whats Brewing 2014. Pale amber colour with an off-white head. Aroma is pumpkin, malt, hop, ginger. Flavour is pumpkin, malt, hop, ginger, cardamon, cloves. Weird beer, but not not bad.

From tap at BD Helsinki. Smell of tar, ash. Black colour, tiny brown head. Aroma of coffee, licorice, cocoa, roasted malts, alcohol, oak. Probably the heaviest body I've ever had in imperial stout. Oily texture, slightly burning palate. Semi-flat carbon. Awesome.

Bottle at home, 26th April 2015. Aroma is sweet liquorice, slight leather. Taste is liquorice, coffee, dark chocolate, slight smoke. Really nice impy, got slightly sweet as it warmed. Overall good

Tap @ Speakeasy, Tallinn. Pours dark ruby with beige head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is sweet, caramel, fruits, malt. Flavor is sweet and sticky, caramel, fruits, malt and alcohol. Finish is dry bitter. Overall: good. Rating: 7:4:7:3:15=3.6 Update: tried it again from bottled and it’s less enjoyable. Booze is very overwhelming in this one.

Tap @ Speakeasy, Tallinn. Pours amber with beige head. The head doesn’t stay. Aroma is intense fruits, citrus, mango, malt. Flavor is sweet and bitter, citrus, mango, caramel, malt, alcohol. Finish is grapefruit-pine bitter with some alcohol. Overall: feels rough, but I still enjoyed it. Update: tried some bottles and it still rough around the edges, but for some reason I really really like it (it’s now my favorite Põhjala brew), so bump +2 to the overall.

On tap @ Brewdog Helsinki. Poured near black with a thin espresso head. Raspberry, marmalade, chocolate notes in aroma, roasted malt. Flavor has raspberries, chocolate candy sweetness, molasses and some light red wine notes. On the sweeter side but very enjoyable still.

330ml bottle from Uba ja Humal, Tallinn
Pours pitch black with a thick brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, chocolate, coffee, cocoa and hints of lactic notes. Taste is smooth, roasty and chocolatey with hints of coffee, cocoa, vanilla and milky notes. Finish is smooth, robust and rich with some roastiness, milky coffee notes, chocolate and vanilla. Nicely balanced and tasty porter.

330ml Bottle - Golden/light amber with a slight haze. Pineapple, mango, grapefruit and a hint of ginger in the aroma. Hoppy, fruity and slightly tangy taste with peach, mandarin, pineapple, grapefruit and mango.

Estonian IPA with thickly lacing, very pale beige, creamy head with decent retention, pretty orangey to amber colour, lightly hazy but cloudy with deposit, low sparkling. Rather unusual, but very pleasant floral, nutty and fruity aroma, hints of orange peel, cake, sundried tomatoes, lots of toasted bread, persimmon, chamomille, brown bread, grapes, roasted chestnuts, honey-glazed spareribs, green olives, overripe papaja, cranberries, bourbon. Crisp and fruity onset, peaches, red berries and something exotic I can’t quite put my finger on, background hop bitterness already manifesting itself in the beginning and obviously increasing towards the end; soft carbonation (expected in view of the lack of fizz), smooth, salty accent, clear but subtle umami taste, very nutty and toasted malts supporting the dry, peppery, lightly citrussy, spicy hop bitterness in the finish, lasting quite long and becoming somewhat resinous and bitter root-like in the end, lasting for a long time. Interesting and well-crafted IPA, but a little bit undercarbonated.

33cl bottle from Sip, Tallinn. Pours slightly hazy golden to orange with a lasting, white head. Rather spicy and yeasty aroma with citrusy and wheaty notes and hints of ginger. Moderate sweet with a yeasty and spicy flavours with a light acidity and a rather dry finish.
