Description
It all started with eight visionary men who founded the “Vereinsbrauerei Berliner Gastwirte zu Berlin AG” on February 1st, 1872 in Rixdorf. They established a modern brewery within one year, which was opened on July 19, 1873. The first public serving takes place on this day. In 1890 the brewery decides, as one of the first breweries in Germany, to brew a Pilsen beer. It is called - based on its southern German relatives - "Berliner Kindl". In 1910 the brewery is renamed "Berliner Kindl Brauerei AG". In 2006 Berliner Kindl returns to its former location in the east of Berlin. The entire range is now brewed in the Berliner Kindl Schultheiss brewery in Lichtenberg.

11.1 oz bottle - Pours a slightly hazy yellow with a thin white head. It has a nice sour citrus aroma. The flavor is also mainly sour citrus with some sweet, malty wheat backing. It’s light, crisp and has substantial carbonation. It’s nothing to get excited about, but it’s interesting and very refreshing.

On tap at Klostergarten Neurippen. Clear, golden body with a dense, white head. Grassy, grainy nose with some hops. Could do well with some more hop aroma. The flavor is quite bitter, slightly fruity, and with some grain and grass. Medium to thin body. The finish is long and bitter, with some sweetness blending in. A quite refreshing, and a bit dry pilsner. (070802)

(Bottle, Monk’s Caf’e, Stockholm) Very pale yellow colour with brief white head. Tart, slightly lactic nose with notes of lemon and tart wheat aromas. Tart, fruity taste with notes of lemon and a slightly lactic character. Harsh, dry and tart finish. Thin body, more taste than implied by body and abv. Fresh beer with a very distinct, singular character.

330 ml bottle. Hazy pale yellow body with a decent white head. Aroma is sour and sweet at he same time. Flavor is really sour, but not similar with a Lambic/Geuze. Might be some grapefruit here and traces of vinegar, body is thin and watery. I did not find this beer balanced, at it’s best you may say it’s refreshing.

330 ml bottle. A bit hazy red body with a big pink head. Almost nauseating artificial raspberry aroma and flavor. Just sticky and sweet. Difficult to recognize the beer behind this.

330 ml bottle. Clear mint green bottle with a suspicious looking small green head. Aroma is even more suspicious, sweet artificial almond/green almond. The flavor is like the aroma and really sweet & sticky. I try to be open-minded about this and am aware that it’s supposed to be a tradition in Berlin for this stuff, but this is difficult to accept as a beer. I don’t like it at all but then again appearance and flavor is nice if it’s supposed to be like this. The famous “This is just not me” statement is bullshit, you can’t drink coffee and say you don’t like coffee so this is bad.

Re-rate 7/12/10: Bottle sample at a tasting. Thanks Shachar. Cloudy pale yellow. A "stinking" lactic aroma with some tropical fruits, apples, yogurt and wheat. Sour flavor of yogurt, fresh fruits and a bit of vinegar. Light-bodied and quenching. 7/4/8/3/15=3.7
Re-rate 6/17/08: Bottle at Alt-Berliner Weissbierstube in Berlin. Served with a straw. Very pale yellow with a medium white head. Fruity aroma, quite citrusy, with some wheat. Sour lemony flavor with wheat and lactic sourness. Medium-bodied. Good stuff but I miss Schultheiss. 7/4/8/4/15=3.8
Bottle. Very pale yellow color with a tiny white head that disapears immediately. Acidic aroma of wheat and fruitiness (mostly apples). Great sour flavor of wheat, apples and citrus. Light to medium body with lots of carbonation. Really nice and refreshing. I should get more examples of this style. 7/3/8/4/15=3.7

Champagne coloured. Thin, watery appearance. Aroma is not pleasant; musty, old. Taste is sour. It’s a very thin mouthfeel much like soda water only with a lot of vinegar added. Leaves an awful taste in the mouth. It’s like sherbert without the sweetness.

Super Bier!! Test vom 14.8.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 9,14,14,15,10,15 - 13,85
