I have consumed this a couple times while I lived in Chicago the past year. Finally bought a 500mL just to rate it at the very end of my time. Generally, this beer has an acceptable level of sulpheric aroma and herbal lager. Flavor is strong white malt with similar herbal and sulphur finish. Its a light too thick in flavor, not light and bright as I would like. However, I am not disappointed when I drink this.

500ml bottle. Murky unfiltered orange hued amber-brown. Steady beige head. Really sublime and well done. Smooth and easy drinking, on the lighter side of full bodied. I’m not a fan of amber malt in general, but they do a really job of balancing it out. Toffee, caramel, red wheat, cherrywood. Solid.

Extremely well done if this is the style we’re putting this in. The barrel is done just right, and just enough coffee to give a hint. This actually reminds me more of an altbier in the overall feel. Pours slightly cloudy orange with good head and lacing. Tap at Black Squirrel.

500ml bottle. Filtered-looking orange body, but a little haze so who knows. Steady, solid, creamy off-white head. Bready, mild aroma, some earthy noble hop. A pretty tasty Heller Bock. Comes off a little fruitier, in an ale way, than I’d expect from the style. Still has quite a nice amount depth. More boldly hopped than most European examples. I’m a sucker for interesting German styles and variations, so this works for me.

Rye bread nose. Murky ochre, thick sticky yellow head. Astringent. Pencil shavings, lemon zest, dried leaves on the back end. Light body, soft carbonation, no noticeable alcohol. Refreshing despite its appearance, but not fantastic.

Bottle at Craig’s. Pours amber, nose is burnt toffee, roasted coffee, vanilla, taste is dry coffee, sweet roasted chocolate.

Deep super hazy and colloidal ruby tinted copper coloured body with a muddy brown glow and a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of alcohol, light spices, hay, grass, herbs, light hops and some caramel - interesting and strong. Light to Medium-bodied; Oddly astringent and medicinal at first with a thinnish malty flavour and a light bitterness that lingers with some fruits and alcohol. Aftertaste shows some hop bitterness, a touch of caramel and a thin dry oak flavour that persists throughout. Overall, an interesting beer that shows on a few different levels, but i’m not sure it really counts as complexity. Neat to try, but didn’t work out so great in hindsight. I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods (Bowery) in New York, New York on 01-November-2013 for US$7.99 sampled at home in Washington on 22-July-2014.

Gotta give it props for how it looks in the glass. Deeper gold color than a "regular" beer, lots of bubbles feeding frothy head. Like a Schlitz gone native. I’m enjoying this on the patio where the neighbor has just cut his grass, so that may be what I’m catching most of in the nose. But then there’s a pretty rich German malt underneath. taste is full of biscuity, well-turned, but still lightly kilned malt. Alcohol is pretty up front, and may even be a distraction. Hop bitterness is largely there to counteract malts, like a well-behaved German noble hop would. Though I think Local Option only pays lip service to meeting style guidelines, this is indeed a "bright" bock that others could learn a thing or two from.

Dosc przedziwne piwo, szokujaca etykieta, skojarzenia tego piwa i butelki jakby bylo za skandynawii. Niewielka piana ale ciemno bursztynowy kolor silnie metny i bardzo brudny ponury efekt to daje. Piwo koloru ciemno bursztynowego. W zapachu silne akcenty melona grejfruta oraz kwaskowatej pomaranczy. W smaku cos jak IPA z dodatkiem cytrusow, a na koniec nieco drozdzowosci i chleboweko dobrze wypieczonego wiejskiego bochenka chleba. Przedziwne piwo ale zlozonosc wysoka i roznorodne efekty smakowe. Piwo dla zainteresowanych.
