On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe. Pours almost black with minimal off-white head and good lacing. There’s a strong aroma of (mainly) fudge and toffee. In the mouth it is sweet with some underlying bitterness. Flavour of roasted malts, toffee and cola, plus traces of vanilla and chocolate. Finish is slightly sweet and chewy. This is rather nice – and has enough malts to remind it is actually a beer !

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours a murky dark chestnus with visible sediment, and a minimal frothy off-white head. Aroma has malts and baked beans. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy with malts, caramel and biscuit. Later traces of spice and ginger can be detected too. Finish is sweet and sickly. It’s a bit of a mess frankly.
