Bottle. Amber beer with a low off-white head. Low malty, grassy aroma. Sweet malt flavor with honey and floral tones and a bit of spice underneath. Lingering honey/malt sweetness. Medium body. Light carbonation (barely a pop when the bottle was opened). Better with food.

Bottle from Santa - dark brown with red tint - roasted malt, caramel and cocoa aroma - medium roasted malt character - light chocolate sweetness, but the beer is mostly dry, with a light peat quality - a hint of plum in the background - a decent schwarzbier, but nothing to rave about.

Cask handpull at County Hotel JDW Ashford and Thomas Ingoldsby JDW Canterbury. Black colour with ruby edges. Bubbly tan head. The Ashford sample had too much butter on the aroma for me. Sourish in mouth, but the dominated by butter/caramel. Faint dark malts make their way through, but I wasn’t keen. The Canterbury sample was similar but a little less butter/caramel. Still not something I would want again.1.5/5.0 Re-rate County Hotel, Ashford. So much better. Decent black stout, more like a dunkel really.

Bottle: Copper coloured, thin but stable and lacing white foam; caramel and sweet toasted malt in the nose; mild, but distinctive hops in the wings; sweetish bitter flavour, medium bodied; caramelly, sweetish finish with a dash of bitterness. 500ml bottle. Pale golden in colour with good clarity and a moderate white head. Light hoppy to the nose. Flavour has some nice hints of sweet malts and lemon. Dry finish. Refreshing and food friendly (Ice Wharf, Camden 19.09.2006).

Bottled at Bishops Arms, Gothenburg. Almost black, clear-looking beer with a small beige head. Roasted flavor and aroma with chocolate and coffee. A bit thin body, and a dryish, coffee-bitter finish. I like it! (060825)

Bottle. Black red/ brown color, huge beautiful beige head. The aroma is quite sweet with notes of caramel, but also some roasted malt and straw. The flavor is also quite sweet with strong notes of caramel and roasted malt - almost burnt malt, the end is dry from the roastyness and somewhat bitter from the hops.
