Description
The desire to discover has a long tradition in Rožňava. The history of this royal city is closely connected with gold mining. Yet Rožňava gold was not only hidden in mines under the town. The German mining experts also brought the craft of making golden beer liquor here. So the history of Rožňava beer specialties dates to the Middle Ages. Years have passed, but the desire to discover the unknown has remained. That’s why we founded the Kaltenecker brewery in 1997. Instead of pre-made parts, we offered an honest craft. Instead of the same-old, variety. Because we’re all different, so why drink the same beer?
Kaltenecker followed a different path than large breweries. We brew our beer specials from 100% malt. We don’t use any stabilizers. Why would we? Our beer sells out immediately. Quality is the bedrock, and we’re also constantly discovering new tastes and new taste combinations. We enlarge our range with popular seasonal specials at least four-times a year. After all, when elderberry flowers bloom on Rožňava’s fields, why not make an elderberry special? We brew in small batches, but always with big imaginations. This is the path our brewery follows.

21/07 RBESG Grand Tasting, 0.33 l bottle. Happy to see such a rare beer here, reportedly 100 l brewed only, at least at the moment. It poured pitch black body with small brown head. Sourish aroma, herbal hops, but dark roasted malts were dominating anyway. Flavor was similar, slightly sweet but also bitter, with whole palette of malty flavors like coffee, caramel, burnt sugar, bread, chocolate. Spiced up with those pleasant sourish herbal hops, which gave nice combo with coffee. Full in body with pleasant bittersweet finish, chocolate and only a little bit of alcohol warming. Four, here we go!

Bottle at the Semi-Final Tasting, my place in London. Big thanks to Imro for sending this one to me! Pours thick black with a heavy, brown cream. Looks great. Nose has some tangy dark malts and mild roast. Flavor is medium sweet with dusty cocoa and dark chocolate, mild tang, bittersweet cocoa and bitter earth. Medium to full bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Mild warmth in the finish, some burnt earth, charcoal, burnt grass, mild meat, tangy dark malts, bittersweet baking cocoa. A very good impy stout. Cool to have tried the best Slovak beer available.

RBESG 12 GT, Cuso was very adamant about this being the best Slovak beer, and he went out of his way to provide us with some bottles, damn cool of him :). Anyway, it poured a black body with a brown cofee head. Coffee in the nose, mollasses, sweet and nice. A good balance between the coffee and chocolate in the taste, nicely sweet, quite dry finish. A very good Imperial stout from a very good brewery.

Small to medium, relatively stable yellowish head over hazed orange-brown beer. Barnyard odours, bread, very slighlty sourish. Slightly smoked flavour - not bad!- nutty. Again even so slightly sourish, nowhere disturbing. Sour-sweet eggbread. Light bodied, spritzy, slight slickness/ Long-lastiing phenolic acidity. Not bad - I wonder if the acidity is intentional, but it certainly is nice. Děkuji, Honza!

1l petka from cuso, many thanks! Hazy pale yellow, large white head. Ginger aroma, not very sweet. Very beery, not soapy-gingery as many ginger beers - this is really very pleasant and the ginger adds some spicyness to the beer, slightly hot and spicy background.
