Description
When Phil Bennett began planning for the Beowulf Brewing Company in 1996 there was no brewing going on in Birmingham. The original site of the brewery was in Yardley, where independent beer production started in the city in 1997. Beowulf began in a disused ex Co-op shop. Our original “signature” beer, Heroes Bitter, is still popular and sits at the head of an capacious list of regular and occasional beers. Now on the shore of Chasewater near Brownhills, Staffordshire the brewery is awash with Regional and National awards. Beowulf’s dark beers attract particular praise, devotion and accolades. The brewery celebrated its first twenty years last year and in 2018 we will finally get it together to have a beautiful website… turns out the internet is not a flash in the pan! Please come back and see it. All our cask and bottled beers will be listed along with some other interesting stuff.

On cask at Sankey's Taphouse, pours a deep dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma brings out light dry cocoa and toasted bready malt. Flavour is along the same lines, with light powdery dry cocoa and toasted malt. Enough bitterness to balance. Smooth and creamy palate. Very nice dark mild.

Half pour (cask) at The Wellington. Dark and slick pour, tiny ring of head remains. Aroma is mellow, roadty, but tadte comes in fuller, bitter and sweet, all with a silky consistency. Hits the spot.

Handpull cask from the Blue Boar, Leicester. Purplish black and opaque with a khaki head. Liquorice dominates the aroma, although there's a touch of burnt oak and heavy malt. The taste is more balanced than I'd feared, with some medicinal acidity in the finish. Herbal bitterness in the aftertaste with a suggestion of molasses. Complex and moreish. Too much liquorice for me but otherwise it's a fine, fine porter.
