Cloudy golden pour, with a frothy, lasting head - resembles a Hefeweizen - subtle but pleasant and complex nose of peppery and tropical hop character, moderate spices (sage, white pepper, thyme), a bit of pineapple - soft but full carbonation - light to medium bodied - flavor is moderately sweet up front, followed by mildly tangy citrus, melon rind - dries out through the middle, bringing fairly strong peppery phenols complimented fairly well by the single hop, adding even more of a spiciness - finish is dry, with lasting spiciness - a little thin/watery in the finish - needs to retain it’s body/firmness throughout, so it kind of falls apart in the end, but still fairly enjoyable.

Bottle thanks to Scott! Pours a slightly hazy pale gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice light grain note with some earthy funk and cereal. Flavor begins with light grains backed by light funk and light fruit with a nice dry finish.

Bottle at Camp Beer IX. Pours a cloudy yellow with white head and sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is floral hops and fruit. Thin mouthfeel with a ginger and pepper flavor with light dry finish. A good saison from Funkwerks.

Bottle at Camp Beer IX. Pours a clear orange with frothy white head and sticky lacing. The aroma is yeast and pepper. Medium mouthfeel with citrus and lemon with a nice pepper finish. Easy to drink a very impressive saison from Funkwerks.

Tap @ brewery. Pours a yellow-orange appearance with a white head. Somewhat fruity, floral hoppy aroma that’s not as tropical fruity as Tropic King which was kind of weird considering the Rakau hops was the main reason behind the tropic fruit notes.. I, myself, do not get Hot Dog condiment notes in the nose. Again, fairly spicy yeasty flavor with some tropical fruitiness and a sweet maltiness. Overall pretty tasty but not superior to Tropic King.

Bottle @ home. Admins, I added this as a belgian ale but feel free to adjust the style as you see fit. Cloudy, yellow-orange appearance with a fluffy white head. Pretty potent fruity (pear, apple, citrus fruits), spicy, peppery, belgian yeasty, sweet malty aroma. Spicy, peppery yeasty, grapefruit, citrus hoppy, sweet, a touch toasty malty, rich fruity flavor. This doesn’t necessarily taste flawed, but it is the second straight disappointing bottle offering from these guys.

Tap @ Funkwerks. This sounds a lot more palatable than spice rack saison. Hazy light banana yellow appearance with a fluffy white head that dissipates pretty quickly. Earthy, chai, fairly spicy, straw, light belgian yeasty aroma. Actually I get a lot more chai in the flavor than the nose. Spicy chai, orange peel, light vanilla, coriander, sweet wheat, belgian yeasty flavor. Not as bad as some chai beers but not nearly as good as the few chai beers that are done well.

Tap @ Funkwerks. This sounds fucked up, but I’m intrigued. Somewhat hazy, golden appearance with a fluffy, white head. The rosemary and sage ready come through strongly in the nose, though it really just smells like a spice rack. Almost smells like one of those four cheese pizzas that’s loaded with spicy. The spices fairly dominate the aroma. The flavor still has that spicy yeasty, lemon citrusy, barnyard flavor with a bunch of misc spices thrown in. I have a hard time seeing how they thought the combination of these four spices would improve or give an interesting alternate beer. This just tastes fucked up to me.

Tap @ Funkwerks. Cloudy reddish brown appearance with a brown head. Fairly spicy, dark fruity (plum, fig, dark grape), a touch tangy, light bourbon, moderate barnyard aroma that’s actually fairly complex. Soft mouth feel. Leather, fig, plum, spicy, a bit musty, chocolate, rich oak, light to moderate bourbon, rich dark toffee belgian yeasty flavor. Very interesting brew.

My first beer from this brewery. +++ Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a murky yellow color with an enormous foamy white head that lingered forever and left incredible lacing. The aroma was tart and musty yeast, citrus, chalk and dust. The flavor was bitter, tart and chalky with notes of bread, Sweettart candies and lemon. The finish was dry, chalky and must with lingering lemon. Medium body. Ok.
