Bottle. Hazy deep golden body. Huge frothy, pillowy white head, mostly lasting. Big spicy aroma of clove, pepper, earth, herbs, sweet cotton candy. Hints of orange and banana. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter and lightly to moderately acidic. Medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation. The initial sweetness is washed away by tastes of clove, pepper, soap and lemon. Just a hint of basement and banana in the taste. The aroma is better than the flavor which seems overspiced. Dry, but not as dry as classic saisons. Good beer.

Bottle as Maori King thanks to grg1313. Pours with a white head over a hazed golden hued body. Aromas are estery and very fruit, grainy, bready, noticeable alcohol, stone fruit, grassy, some spicy phenols. Some over ripe mango (Rakau?) Flavors are a bit sugary, stone fruit, ginger, fruity, grainy, apricot, peach. Lively bubbles and a very dry finish.

Tap @ brewery. Golden yellow orange appearance with a white/off-white head. Slightly resiny hops, candy sugar, dark citrus fruits, light pepper in the nose. Pretty sweet- candy sugar/brown sugar, pepper, lightly resiny, citrus fruits, somewhat acidic, and somewhat floral flavor. A little too sweet for my taste.

Tap @ brewery. Gorgeous, glowing orange appearance with a cream colored head. Peppery, citrusy aroma from their house yeast, slightly floral hoppy nose. Mild floral, a touch piney hoppy, peppery, belgian yeasty, lemon-tangerine citrusy flavor. The saison yeast really makes this more like a belgian ale than a pale ale and as usual from these guys, it’s pretty tasty.

Hmmm, so this one is a little odd - a bit of molasses and brown sugar, plus a touch of smoky phenols - quite a bit of pepper - candi sugar sweetness is clean but a bit high - not usually a fan of sweet saisons - mild tartness and citrus from the yeast tries to balance, but the sweetness is rather heavy - loads of peppery phenols in the finish - alcohol is well masked - it’s okay, but too sweet for me.

Tap at Funkwerks - hazy golden pour - soapy head - nose is moderate acid and a lot of pineapple and other tropical fruit character from the Brett - creamy an medium bodied in the mouth - a fair amount of acidity is tempered well by lightly sweet vanilla and mild oak - a lot of topical flavor - acidity is a little sharp - finish of light Chardonnay - decent.

Tap at Funkwerks - hazy copper beer - nose is citrusy American hops and light yeast phenols - flavor is a bit more promising - a lot of Biscuity malt character and bright American hops that play well off of the citrus quality imparted by the yeast - tangy finish, with some lingering toasted grains - I like it.

Carbonation got out of hand and possibly a wee bit of it leaked out, but it is hard to say. In any case, I don’t think that this was ruined, although it was perhaps slightly altered. Pours a cloudy golden color with oodles and oodles of frothy white head. Aroma is of pepper, spice, a hint of fruitiness, and some yeast (the pilsner malt aspect were certainly present). Taste was very much on the dry side of saison-land. Kind of sweet at the front and then goes for the spice and whatnot towards the end. My friend who tried this noted that it is like drinking two beers at once. In any case, this is a good refreshing saison and I would be interested to try and non-shipped bottle to see whether my experience of it was vitiated.

Tap @ brewery. Hazy amber appearance with an off white head. The hibiscus comes through moderately in the aroma creating a floral, sweet, caramel, fruity nose with the house yeast well noted. Floral and floral dryness, accompany the caramel fruity saison flavor. I’m not sure the hibiscus is really adding to the beer but the beer is still not bad.
