As the “Köstritzer Erbschenke” the Köstritzer black beer brewery is first mentioned in 1543, making it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In 1948, the brewery became a "Volkseigener Betrieb" after the state of Thuringia had expropriated it. In 1991 the Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei became part of the Bitburger Group and within a few years it has grown into one of the most modern and largest breweries in Thuringia.

Barwa brązowo rubinowa, klarowna. Piana beżowa, wysoka i średnio trwała, drobno i średnio ziarnista, pozostawia znikome ślady na szklance.
Aromat mało wyraźny, delikatnie palony, lekko orzechowy, trochę ubogo i mało intensywnie.
Wysycenie średnie w kierunku do wysokiego.

Kolor ciemno brązowy, klarowny. Piana wysoka i trwała. Topnieje tworząc pół centymetrowej grubości pierścień i delikatny, spieniony kożuch. Ładnie krążkuje.
Aromat palony, zbożowy, kawowy z elementami karmelu, spalonego cukru i nut korzenia lukrecji.
Smak lekko wytrawny (kawowy, palony).
Wysycenie średnie. Ciało odczuwalne jako niskie, wodniste. Tekstura nieco szorstka. Posmak długi, palony.

Bottle. Black with a nice brownish head. Smells of roasted malts and a tiny touch of coffee. Taste is malts, coffee and a decent dose of hops. Medium carbonation. A little bit watery but very süffig. Nothing special but a good everyday beer.

Bottle. Rather clear orange-amber color with white head. Aroma is resinous, piney, toffee, toasted malts, some peach. Taste is piney, toffee, caramel, a bit peach again, rather sticky, a little bit medicinal. Bittersweet finish. Medium carbonation. Quite nice, better than expected.

Bottle. Clear reddish-brown color with eggshell head. Aroma is chocolate, toffee, herbal, a bit chemical. Taste is earthy, dusty, a bit oxidized. Dry and low-bodied (why would anyone do this to an Amber Lager?). Has some unpleasant flavours in there which I can’t quite describe, a bit vegetal. Too messy.
