Description
Way back in 1986, before craft brewing was even cool, Summit Brewing Company Founder and President Mark Stutrud set out in St. Paul, Minnesota, to make craft beers inspired by old-world brewing traditions and ingredients. More than 30 years have passed since he first brewed our flagship Summit Extra Pale Ale, and it’s safe to say he freaking nailed it.

Today, Summit Brewing continues to infuse traditional recipes with modern ingredients from around the world, crafting high-quality and consistent craft beer out of respect for the hardworking folks who enjoy our beer.

And because we’re independently owned and operated, we get to make craft beer our way. That means relying on natural carbonation, protecting the foam, and celebrating the true dance between malts, hops, water, and yeast. It means protecting the environment, supporting the community and the arts, being kind to animals, and always having one more beer with our friends and family even if we’re already late for rotary club. It means drinking our beer fresh and cold, because warm storage turns good beer to shit. And it means never settling for “good enough,” always pulling the goalie when we’ve got a chance to win, swinging for the fences, and never, ever forgetting where we come from. Grain country represent.

12oz can. Unfiltered bronze-orange body. Foamy off-white head. A little bit resinous, charred hop tone. Also a little more depth than most current IIPAs. A little bit faded in the state I drank it. hopefully more vibrant fresh. Exceeded my low expectations.

Light overall. Some noticeable coriander and a little spice. The yeast stands out. It is light and refreshing, but not particularly full flavored.

On tap at Acadia. Pours black with a earthy brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has dark grains and roasted malts with a hint of salted chocolate underlying. Flavor has earthy dark grains and roasted malts with a bit of dark chocolate supporting.

Has muted aromas of a little resiny hops and pale malts. Flavors are like nose, not a lot of hop flavor just some bitter, malt, not a lot going on.

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce can into tulip glass, no can dating. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy golden amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lemon, peach, pear, melon, red apple, coriander, peppercorn, clove, sage, rosemary, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, pale/wheat malts, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon, peach, pear, melon, red apple, coriander, peppercorn, clove, sage, rosemary, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Moderate peppery yeast spiciness; light herbal/grassy bitterness and yeast tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, peach, pear, melon, red apple, coriander, peppercorn, clove, sage, rosemary, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale/wheat malts, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with an awesome malt/spiciness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Moderate increasing dryness from yeast spiciness and carbonation. High carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.7%. Overall this is an outstanding grissette/session saison! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale/wheat malts, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink. Pretty sure they did not spice this at all, but it sure feels like it. Amazing saison yeast complexity; nice solid malt backbone with no residual sweetness. Extremely flavorful for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

At Summit cask oatmeal stout with tangerine and chocolate. Great palate. Smooth. Lots of chocolate and a little citrus. Sweeter than the original. Chocolate finish, which is much more prominent than tangerine.
