Double New England IPA by Outcast, a brewery in Alberta, Canada, from a tallboy can of half a year old - a bit much for this style, but anyway. Thin and loosely knit, off-white, immediately open head with some small 'dots' in the middle and a discontinuous 'ring' around the edge disappearing almost completely; murky ochre-hued peach blonde robe, looking like homemade pear juice, not very attractive but not very atypical for NEIPA either. Quite expressive but not necessarily enticing aroma of overripe shallot, fermenting mango, moldy oranges, withering kitchen herbs (dill), old dough, strong 'old hops urine', thyme, cold potato mash, granadilla juice of a few days old and even stale homemade lime juice, hints of English gin or spiced Polish wodka, juniper berries, wet clay. Lively fruity onset, lime sourishness equally mixed with mango and carambola sweetishness, pineapple accent, mild yet still somehow 'refinedly' stinging, minerally carbonation (a tad much for style perhaps), slick and supple, bit 'fluffy' body. Soggy sandwich-like malty breadiness underlies an expressive aromatic dimension, bringing back the impressions from the nose, mostly the 'rotting' shallots, urine, moldy citrus fruit and overripe mango; the hops at the same time also deposit a lingering, slightly resinous, green-herbal and peppery bitterness onto the root of the tongue, but never evolving into full-fledged resiny bitterness. Powdery (due to yeast more than hop 'powder') ending, with a glow of very gin-like alcohol, while 'neutral'-flavored, palpable breadiness persists. I see mostly mediocre ratings of this one below me and I can easily see why: this has the basic features of a (strong) NEIPA for sure, but fails to hit the sensitive spot when it comes to hoppy aromatics, instead delivering old, moldy, sweaty aromas which many 'failed' NEIPA attempts tend to display. A bit of a mess, if still enjoyable from a purely flavour-wise viewpoint; not very successful as a NEIPA though, even if admittedly I taste this beer too old - if ever there was a style to enjoy young, it was probably NEIPA, whether it be 'double' or 'single'. NEIPA will never be my personal cup of tea and I sincerely think this hype is hugely overrated, but within those restraints, this is not quite as bright, juicy and saliva-inducing as e.g. Trillium's or Cloudwater's equivalents in the exact same range. I guess my first encounter with this brewery was a tad disappointing, but then I came to be a lot more severe when judging NEIPAs than before, this can is clearly too old, this brewery probably performs better at other styles and I'm probably just and old bore now that the text limit is again 10,000 characters.

Tall can at Erik's. Pours a dirty pale golden with a white head. Aroma is caramel and citrusy. Taste is similar. Old school. Ok.

473mL can, pours a cloudy dull golden orange with a small white head. Aroma smells a bit old and old school, with earthy hops, bready malt, and aged hops. Flavour is along the same lines, with bready malt and earthy aged hops. Old school and just not in prime condition. It's okay.

Rather dull colour, thin head. On the nose, there's nice orangey notes, some oxidized notes, and a bit too much yeastiness. Fairly soft body, with a fairly orangey note, relatively low bitterness relative to that much hop on the nose. The malts are a mess - thin, harsh, empty - and the beer is way too yeasty. This really undermines the hops.

Can - Caramel malts. Cloudy gold with a decent white head. Tea leaf hop notes and caramel. Very old school.

Can - Nice citrus and a touch with touch of pith. Cloudy gold with a decent white head. Candied orange and a decent finish.

Can - Grassy hops and a touch of funk. Cloudy gold with a rich white head. Grassy, mango and aa dry finish.

Tall can at Josh&Sunshine place. Pours a murky blonde with a white head. Aroma is citrusy with mandarin notes. Taste is fruity and citrusy. Pretty good.

Tasting at Oakes' Manor; can
Cloudy pale blond colour. Nice aroma, don't expect a Pilsner, it has some lactic acid and juicy touch. Not too dry, mild malt flavour, a bit crackery, with a touch of citrusy hops.
Nice Pale Ale.
