Description
The starting point for the history of the Zaporizhzhia plant was the adoption of the Plan of Economic Development for the USSR Republics in the early 1970s. The document was set to solve the problem of the acute shortage of beer in the country. The Plan included the construction of about 22 beer brewing plants with the annual output capacity of 45—60 million liters of beer each. The construction of one of the first brewing plants according to a novel design by Czech engineers, started in 1971, with a record capacity for that time of 72 million liters of beer a year. Czech professionals were supervising the installation and checkout of equipment, as well as trained their Ukrainian colleagues to operate it. On December 12, 1974, the personnel of the Zaporizhzhia Beer Plant No. 2 made their first brew, and the first batch of beer was bottled on January 15, 1975. The new product was gaining popularity at a fast speed.
In 1976, the plant joined the Zaporizhzhia Industrial Association of Beer and Soft Drink Producers, which then was in operation until 1984. In 1986, the history of the plant saw the start of a campaign to fight alcohol addiction. Back in those years, sales quotas were introduced for the product, so this led to a significant drop in production output. For a while, beer had been in short supply. The years of Perestroika were also tough on the plant, with the economic crisis of the late 1980s worsening the matter. Ukraine was suffering from the collapse of the financial and payment systems, as well as from the disruption of economic links with the Soviet republics. However, despite all the challenges, the production was running virtually non-stop.

Pale blond color. Some aroma of malt, paper, vanilla, white pepper, soap. Dry mouthfeel, some taste of cereals paper and soap. High bitterness. Strange.

Good, slightly yellowish tinted head, leaving some lace over deep golden beer. Very creamy nose, milk-ripe grain, bit grassy, and sweet malts, even caramel in the finish. More caramel in the taste. Slight bitterness, as from bitter almonds, ending in dry grain. Nothing very outspoken. Light to medium bodied. Bit spritzy MF, hints at alcohol. Better than most E.E. swill, but still not a very interesting beer.

Small offwhite creamy head doesn’t last. Yellow body with ongoing carbonation. Faint, sweetish grassy aroma. Sweetish kind of nothing taste with chalky, grassy notes. Dry aftertaste. Clean, but boring. (0.5l bottle.)

Medium offwhite head; yellow body with ongoing carbonation. Sweet fruity aroma. Taste is again very fruity and sweetish with notes of metal and grass. Quite bitter. Bitter, metallic grassy aftertaste. Some chalk. There are some alcohol notes, but not enough to detract from the beer. With a bit less bitterhops (and some more aroma hops, maybe Amarillo) this could be a really good beer. As it is, it’s quite good. (0.5l bottle.)

Medium white head, yellow body with ongoing carbonation. No aroma at all. Dense, sweetish alcohol taste, with bitter grassy aftertaste. Some spice, reminiscent of pine needles. It’d decent, but I didn’t really enjoy it much. (0.5l bottle.)

Very pale yellow body, almost no head. White head quickly disappears entirely. Caramelly, buttery aroma. Almost no taste; vague hints of malts and grass, but nothing more. As such, this could be described as a successful ice beer. (0.33l bottle.)

Medium white head; clear yellow body with ongoing carbonation. No discernible aroma. Rounded, empty taste with an acidic, lemony finish. Decent, and slightly interesting, on account of the lemon. (0.5l bottle.)

500ml Bottle, Picked up from the ’Dodgy Deli’ on the Cowley Rd, Oxford. Golden beer with foamy head, corn in the aroma, some malt but quite sweet, another Baltic Pale lager that follows in the vein of others but this one wasn’t quite so good.

Hazed amber lager with a thick collapsing white head. Sweetish malt aroma with berry notes, almost veering on blueberries. In mouth, sweet malt with same berry notes, light hopping, caramel malt. Pleasant and honest.
