Description
Founded in 1900, Cervezas Ambar is an independent Spanish brewery that maintains the spirit of a constantly evolving family enterprise. With 18 beer varieties, it has more specialities than any other brand. It continues to produce beer at the same brewery where it began operations in the early part of the last century, located in the historic San José neighbourhood. There they maintain the craft processes of the 20th century, with their own malting facility and the only open vat fermentation room still in use anywhere in Spain.

Bottle 33cl. from the Landmarkt @home poured into a shaker. Clear deep amber colour, good frothy white head, mostly diminishing, light lacing. Aroma sweet malts, grain, some caramel. Taste medium sweet and slightly bitter, malty, metallic notes. Light body, watery texture, short sweet aftertaste, cardboard notes, meh, insufficient barely quaffable.

Dorada tirando a naranja, de espuma generosa. Aroma a bizcocho, mandarina y serrín. En boca es suave al paladar, de tono dulce y floral. Sabor peculiar nada común, pero para nada desagradable, todo lo contrario. Flores, mandarina, toques especiados. Curiosa, diferente y que merece ser probada.

IPA from local brewery in Zaragoza in northeast Spain, thanks to my girlfriend Goedele for this unknown bottle! Medium thick, moussy, egg-white, regular, slowly breaking, dotty-lacing, eventually opening and thinning head on a near clear, deep golden beer with orangey hue, slight haze in the middle along with disparate strings of sparkling. Aroma of banana candy, hand soap, orange-flavoured Fruitella candy from when I was a child, lavender, bath foam, plaster, apple peel, sugared tea, something lemonade-like. Sweetish onset in a very clean, slick way, bit sugary even, apple and banana aspects, softish carb, some minerally notes; very slick, slender body, thinly caramelly and cereally maltiness, increasingly bittered by a quinine-ish, rooty, peppery hoppiness which fills the finish, ending with a wormwoody bitterness that lingers for quite a long time, along with something soapy or bubblegummy. The nose did not promise much, to put it kindly, but this beer does behave a lot better in the mouth: though thin and lacking in depth and power, it does offer a long-lasting, wormwoody, tonic-watery bitterness of a kind I have not encountered in IPA in a long time. Almost English IPA in style, but with a more powerful bitterness sitting closer to its West Coast heir - and even if the whole beer feels a bit half-hearted and misses the point in terms of aroma, this refreshing bitterness is an important plus for me personally so I cannot be too harsh on this one, which I feel is a bit underrated here.

Sample courtesy of Grumbo, cheers Graham! Amber colour, short-lived white bubbly head on top and aroma of grain, hint of mouthwash. Taste is sweetish, grains, cardboard with some papery bitterness. Light bodied, medium carbonation, papery finish. Kind of OK

33cl bottle: BB 18th May 2022. Drank at home on 17th Jun 2021. Clear and clean golden body, no head worthy of the name. Malty, Ricey and Corny in both the nose and semi-sweet taste. Disappointed to be honest, hoped for better.

11/6/2021. Bottle from WiseBartender.co.uk. Pours clear pale gold with a small frothy white head. Aroma is light, malty, caramel, syrup, touch cardboard. Medium sweetness and light bitterness. Light body, watery texture, average carbonation. Sweet fizzy caramel water finish. Not the best AF lager but okay for what it is.
