Description
The Žatec (Saaz) region is famous worldwide for its unchallenged hops so it doesn't come as a surprise that brewing started way back in the Middle Ages. In 1261 the Society of Žatec Privileged Brewers was established. Close to the end of the 18th century, the Žatec breweries together were not able to cover the full market demand for beer so after 30 years of hesitation it was finally decided to build a new brewery in 1797 where brewing started in 1801. After the German occupation the brewery was nationalized. In 1995 reprivatisation took place and in 2014 the brewery was acquired by Carlsberg. Brewery closed in Spring 2022. A new microbrewery with new ownership started brewing, using its brands, in 2023.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a refrigerated glass. Pours a clear golden with small white head that dissapates fairly quickly, good lacing, medium carbonation. Not much aroma, but taste is nice malt (barley, biscuit with a hint of lemongrass) and some hops. Not a big tasting beer, but well balanced and this would be great for a session beer. Under rated, best czech pilsner I have had.

Bottled. A golden beer with an off-white head. The aroma has notes of malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and caramel, leading to a dry bready finish.

(Draught at Crown Rivers JDW, London Heathrow Terminal 2, 19 Apr 2009) Golden yellow colour with frothy, white head. Malty, grassy nose with notes of hay and bread. Malty, grassy taste with hay and grassy hops. Thin body, fairly dry. Low bitterness. More of a standard pale Euro lager than a Bohemian pilsener to be honest. Boring stuff.

A fine pilsner with more flavor than most. Both bready malt and noble hop flavors shine in the flavor of this beer. The aroma is fairly nondescript, nothing bad but not much more than a fresh dinner roll malt note. The malt is a bit too simply sweet, but the hops cut right through the sugar. It’s a surprisingly big flavor for the abv and style. A pleasant surprise.

Gold, rather loose white head. Cereal malts and some floral hop aroma. Thin body, little bitterness. Possibly a bit stale. Poor for the style.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of oh6gdx. Pours a clear golden with a white head. Sweet and malty nose. Medium body, again sweet and malty in the flavour with a little flowery hops leaving only a discreet bitterness. Easy to drink, easy to forget. 171109
