draught, served ice-cold Very pale gold; collapsing yellowish head, very dense. "Herb" nose, bit of hops and little malt, bit of ’sulphur’ - probably very green-yeasty beer. Sweet, soft-grainy taste, again yeasty-fruity-estery. Probably even sweeter when warming up. Sticky-sweet MF, keeps sticky, smacking for a long time. This could do with some lagering. Very green, though not bad.

Wässriger, getreidig hellmalziger Antrunk. Besser im Abgang, hell süßlich, etwas trocken-herb. Mittelintensiv, süffig, nett. Dann aber wieder langweilig monoton, keine Spur von Hopfen, etwas. Holz. /9/8/8/9/8

Sweet malt aroma with hint of apricot - for some reason initial smelled like bleach. A bit on the drier side than most Koelschs. Seems a bit bland. Not my favorite Koelsch.

Paid $2.49 for a 500ml bottle. Very average golden with a small white head. Smells slightly grassy and nutty-- smells more like the stereotypical "dark" beer than a light one. Very average taste... A bit grassy, has hints of nuttiness, but nothing special. Well, there's another beer under my belt, so I guess it was worth it... but it wasn't anything to tell others about.

It has a darker shade of blond, small head. Very light malt and cereals aroma; the flavor too is simple, just light malt; ordinary bitterness. Boring.

2004-01-23, bottle, 4-2-5-2-9=22
Light blond color. Light carbonic aroma, and very light hop. Watery; poor taste. Quite bitter end, but no real feature.

At the Brauerei Ausschank, July 2011. Bright yellow with a lasting and very white head. Aroma of fruit, malt, herbal hops and DMS. Sweet and full bodied, fruity and spicy hoppy flavur, with a good bitter finish.

New rating: 2/24/2010: My first rating was #133, back in 2003. Now that I know a little more about Kölsch, time for a re-rate: Sweet malt smell in pour, not much hops to it, just lighter than pilsener. Pale gold color, just a few bubbles twinkle along the glass. Light taste. Kind of saccharine, but that’s what I’ve been finding in my Goose Summertime too. Maybe this summer style just doesn’t age too well. Not much in the way of hops, though there is a slightly fruity ester. This may have gone down better on my back porch in the summer, instead of in my basement after another snowfall. But I just seem to like this less the second time around. Original rating, 11/11/03: 6-3-7-3-13:
Bottled. Malty, with a kind of raw grainy texture to it. A pleasing extra kick of hops.

Before the Jager laid waste to my palate, I continued my Steinkeller tapping with this decent kolsch. Light and fruity, straw-colored, and refreshing. I agree that there was a hint of metal in the flavor. Decent enough.

Golden colour, small bubbles rise from the bottom for the length of the beer. Strawy flavour, slight metallic ting. Bittering aftertaste, but definately not a bad beer. I had this one out of the same bottle with DougShoemaker given to us by Lyle Ostrow at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York.

I'm updating this with a fresh draft pour from WoB, and a huge upgrade from the old 7/2/5/2/9 = 2.5 rating (preserved below). Served in a tall thistle type glass, clean lemony and grassy hop flavors, with some cracker/bready malt flavors. Clean looking golden in the glass. Original rate: My first real German Kolsch, and unfortunately a bottled one - still no experience with the authentic fresh stuff. A fairly boring beer - light gold with a quickly fading fizzy head. Light fruitiness in the nose with a light spicy herbal hop aroma. Very mild tasting, mostly clean malt and med bitterness. Light body, and just not much there.
