Approximately 16 oz mug draft at Schmidts Sausage Haus in Columbus, Ohio. The pour is a clear golden copper, with a smallish white head. Nice lace left on glass as the head recedes. The aroma is bright grain, toast, and a touch of malt sweetness. The taste is a delicate blend of the lightly sweet malt, and the toasted cracker malt. The taste thins out a bit before showing some mineral earth in the finish. The palate is light bodied, a bit dull on the carbonation, and finish has the mineral and is bright and clean. Tasty, easy drinking beer.

Sample at the North Market Microbrew Festival on 09/12/2009. The beer is a mostly clear gold-amber color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of grassy hops and citrus. Medium body with flavors of hops, citrus and some sweet malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a lingering hops aftertaste. Decent overall.

On draught at the Hoster’s re-tapping at Barley’s Ale House #1 on February 3, 2005. The excitement of having Hoster’s back definitely outweighed their choice of the first beer to bring back to market. This is Hoster’s flagship beer, and while not my favorite it is a pretty good Dortmunder. Served in a logo glass. Clear dark gold color with mild effervescence and a medium foamy white head. Minimal lacing. The aroma is bready and somewhat sweet with malt and a bit of hops. Light-bodied and smooth with a good amount of carbonation. Flavors of earthy malts and grain, with a light citrus hops in the background. The finish is clean and sweet. All in all a good effor for the stylet. Welcome back Hoster’s!

I managed to find what are probably the last 8 bottles of this beer in existence from a beer bar in Newark, OH. As with the other Hoster's I have tried since they went out of business, this was kind of a bittersweet occasion. This beer's sell by date was some time in 2001, and it showed. Poured a pretty amber color with a thin off-white head and minimal lacing. Aroma still possessed a nice malt profile with some fruity tones. Unfortunately the flavor was lacking in that some sour fruit flavor was starting to creep in, so it was not as sweet as most Viennas. Luckily there was still enough caramel and malt flavor to keep it from being a wasted effort. I can't score it by guessing what a fresh bottle would have tasted like, but this was still drinkable and I'm glad I had a chance to try it.

Thanks to Gunshy and krisbierjaeger for pointing me to probably the last store to carry this fine beer. It was really a bittersweet experience for me finally driking this one. I have been checking all over the place trying to find Hoster's beers I still have not tried and it looks like they are indeed gone for good (unless someone steps up and buys the name and recipes). On to the beer. This sample was over a year old but I don't think aging did it any harm. Poured a pretty chestnut color with a thin head. Up-front malt aroma with slight alcohol and something like black cherry hiding behind it. This was not as good as Celebrator (what is?) but it is definitely one of the better Doppelbocks I have had. Warm, enticing malt flavor keeps it interesting throughout. A shame to see it go.
