Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines. Wow, state of these reviews. Clear pale gold. Good thick sticky white froth. Crisp malt. Cream cracker. Earthy shrubby hop leaf. Super clean with a hefty grassy leafy bitterness. Drinks like pop. Ace pils.

Helles of sorts by a brewery located in a small Bavarian village, bottled in a steinie bottle and even named after it; interesting to note is that this particular bottle type was invented in Milwaukee, USA in the thirties by the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, founded in the mid-nineteenth century by Joseph Schlitz, who was one of the people responsible for bringing German style lager brewing to North America. Steinie bottles have done well in the USA but perhaps even better in Belgium, where they are used very frequently by a wide array of breweries (small and big) for a wide array of beers, so for me as a Belgian, this is nothing unusual; in Germany, though, they are a rarity, so this one did stand out in the shop where I bought it. On top of all this, it bears a depiction of Albert Einstein, just because his last name also has 'stein' in it - and because the man is associated with genius more than anyone in modern times... Anyway, on to the beer: snow white, medium sized, opening and receding, dot-lacing head, clear yellow-golden blonde robe. Aroma of old white bread, drying grass, dry cereals, minerals and a persistent sulfuric DMS effect (cooked green cabbage) which bothered me throughout. Clean, neutral onset, minerally carbonation; sweetish, simple pale maltiness, cereally and slick but not too thin, finishing with a dash of grassy and floral hops - but also retronasal DMS. Very basic and below average Helles - I guess the fact that its bottle shape deviates from anything else I found in Germany should have ringed a bell... Drinkable, in all, but lacking the delicate balance of a truly good Helles and sadly marred by DMS, something I am very sensitive to and just cannot get out of my mind once I detected it.
