Description
The tradition of brewing beer in the abbey buildings of the nunnery Göss was revived when in 1860 the brewer and entrepreneur Max Kober acquired parts of the monastery and reactivated the brewery. This important year for Gösser is still noted on the labels today. With the founding of an AG in 1893, Max Kober laid the foundation stone for the development into one of the most important breweries in Austria.
In 1977 Gösser joined the Steirerbrau group, which merged into rivalling Brau-Beteiligungs-AG (BBAG) in 1991. From 1993 both companies operated under Brau Union Austria. In 2003, Gösser with Brau Union was taken over by Heineken.

Nice little green bottle, quite similar to the export one. The two kinds were next to each other, and I picked this one up by "accident". Nice colour really, but the taste was a bit off-putting, sweet in a bad way (plums/raisins maybe). Seems a bit unbalanced. Rerate: Well, guess I was a bit mistaken last time, better this time, but still not that special. No trace of strange sweetness/fruity flavor from the last bottle. Burnt malts are dominant here, giving it a coffeish taste. Seems more robust now. +1 in flavor and overall impression.

(can) Aroma is sweet with a hint of apricot/peach. Large amount of head on pouring. Taste non-offensive. Sweetness does not come out much in the flavor and only a vague hint of malt and hops. Another mild Austrian brew that would taste good after a day of skiing but not when you want a good beer flavor

Bottled (BB 03/2005)
Typical lager color, small but steady white head. Fresh hoppy aroma. Well-balanced hoppied pils but nothing special. (5/3/5/2/10 2.5)
Re-rate, can (BB 07/2007). Pale yellow, small white head. Mild woody hoppy, a bit vegetably nose. Sweet malty, hints of grassy hoppyness somewhere. Standard low-quality bulk lager. (2/2/3/2/6 1.5)

Bottled. Pale golden. Lightly bready, thin and clean. The some grass and a vague trace of hops. Not really as awful as you'd expect the combintion of "Brau Union" and "Ice" to be.

Dark brown coloured body with a soapy tan head. Aroma of malt, slight grapes, raisins and some metal. Medium to Light-bodied; Sweet flavour with some malt present, some caramel and a bit of some raisin sweetness. Very light and subdued aftertaste-almost nothing there! Overall, a sub-par beer and one that really should be overlooked! I bought this twelve ounce bottle (Best by 01.2005) at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York and sampled it on 07.December.2003.

Pale yellowish brew with a medium head. Sweet and very light beer. This is good for hot summer days under the sun. I don't think there is a need to drink this more then once...

Bottled. Although the bottle I got from my fellow homebrew club member's basement was dated "Best by 3/01," it still bore up in pretty good shape. A sudsy head over the usual straw body. I can taste a little of the Dortmunder style here; certainly a little more malty sweetness than an American beer, without being sugary, and a hint of German hops. To paraphrase their own slogan; Nicht so “Gut” as a DAB, “Besser” than a Beck's.
