The Fachs family still owns - now in the fifth generation - the brewery. In 1984 Engel becomes the first German brewery to bottle Radler. Since the turn of the millennium, Engel-Biermanufaktur has developed into a specialty brewery that regularly receives awards for its beers.

An amber beer with a fine white head. The aroma is very sligth - what is there is malty sweet. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of roasted bread and a hop dry end.

Orange, faint haze; fine orange tinted white head. Cocos, caramel, and a fresh garden aroma (vegetable patch after a shower?). Peppery, spicey tinge on top of a rather flat sweet base - bit of cookie, bit of caramel. But flat; finish has some bittery notes, but not quite exitingly so. The label reads: ingredients : water, malt, hops (where’s the yeast??). Now this is the usual descending ratio in a ny beer. But in this beer it is more than usual ratio for the first. Can’t they use a decent kick of hops, dammit?

Clear brown-amber, greenish shine; slim, diffuse off-white head. Caramel & a bit gassy - gRassy too. eeehh! Surprise, surprise. Couldn’t be more different from the other Engel Dunkels as possible. Blind, I’d say a very good keg British B.B. Quite delicate-hoppy, again a bit grassy. Rather light bodied. It is a bit watery, but the aftertaste yields more bitterness. As said, not at all German in character, and not any the worse for it.

Red-brown, clear; slim light-brown head. Remarkable nose! Freshly ground coffee; going over into more classical bread and a touch of nuts. Again coffee in the taste - though watery one. Touch sweet, not much. Slight caramel, but it fades away, just like all the rest. Medium bodied at best. Slight adstringency. It promessed much - much more than the dreary Hell. Then it went the same way. Beuh.

Peach to pale gold, only end hazy; yellow-white good head, faintly irregular. Vanilla, pale malt and a hint of hops in the nose. Sweet beer, very malty taste. All in all, a bit dull. Rather dry, not riming with the sweet initial taste (opposite effect of tripel-style). Medium bodied only. End of bottle slightly creamier, bit fruitier too. Bof... Not bad - rather boring. Not what I’d expect from kellerbier - more a "Helles mit etwas Hefen", rather than "ungespundetes Zwickelbier".

Slightly hazy, greenish-amber; off-white head, quite carbonated. Very caramel-y and just a touch grassy nose. Caramel taste, less pronounced than the nose; some bitterness, walnutty in character, leafy. Even a bit of adstringency. Despite its character, nice and refreshing. Quite light MF, however, a bit at odds with the taste. I seem to get some madeirisation, BBD is not indicated clearly. I must confess to like it - and that’s a rarity for this popular one-offs, usually a poor excuse for some quick money.

Orange-gold; very little to no head. Grassy, hoppy nose and a bit of grain, corn flakes-like, a bit roasted. Bitterish, flowery, grassy, bit of hoppiness in the taste. Little malt but the roasted corn. Very refreshing beer, light bodied. Nice Helles – strange corn flakes taste, rather expected from a USA beer than a German. Nice result all the same.
