Largish shiny offwhite creamy head. Brown body with carbonation. (Strange for a low alcohol.) Light milky, grainy aroma. Milky, grainy taste with a touch of chalk and corn. Kind of watery. This is nothing to be proud of; the Young’s light was much better. (0.275l bottle.)

500ml bottle. Golden red body with a thin head. A little hint of chocolate in aroma, otherwise rather discreet fume. Flavor is well balanced, but quite ordinary. Not much bitterness either makes this to anonymous. Rather watery mouth feel. Not totally bad, but not a great ale.

Bottle. Creamy white excellent mostly lasting head. Dark amber colour. Moderate malty light hoppy aroma. Nice powerfull sweet/bitter flavor. Long finish. Creamy palate.

My first barley wine. Pretty glad I picked up this beer before it is gone for good. Pours with a really big head that I was totally not expecting because I heard that this style typically has small heads. Nice sweet tastes on the pale. Minimal hops and minimal alcohol flavour. Overall a good beer that I would have again if it were not so horribly expensive where I live.

16.9 oz bottle - Pours dark reddish brown with a thin head. The aroma is very malty with a touch of dark fruit. The flavor is sweet with mild fruit notes and a bit of spice. There’s really no noticeable alcohol taste, which didn’t surprise me given that the ABV is low for a barley wine. A medium body leads into a slightly dry finish. This is a solid beer.

500ml bottle in a presentation tin from Ashford Sainsbury. Oh man, there has been 4 days since I had a new beer and opening this was quite exciting. Beautifully clear copper colour. Thin lasting head. Young’s yeast aroma with lovely intense hop (sherberty grapefruit) and maybe a hint of cinnamon/nutmeg spice. Very pleasant in mouth,but lacks any real depth of body and there is that typical boiled sweet quality to the malt that is so disappointing in UK pasteurised bottled beer. I had the London Special Ale on train on way home and the mouthfeel is just so much better with the bottle conditioned. The big grapefruity earthy hop is similar. Slightly creamy /sweet. Nice grapefruit on end. Enjoyable beer, but could be so much better. Cask gravity at Pigs Ear BF 07. Russet, good lasting head. Young’s yeast aroma, quite a good best bitter, good peppery hop/spic sting on end. Actually really nice. Creamy and drinkable. 4.3%

Bottle, Sainsburys, Kidlington, 31-10-06. Dark amber in colour, some cocoa and malty notes in the aroma, taste was similar with some nuttiness and hops, good but not as good as the Christmas Pudding from Youngs.

This beer looks dangerous. Poured a deep opaque brown with ruby red edges. The head is creamy, frothy, thick and off white in color. Sweet and fruity aroma, like plums. The flavor is excellent, sitcky sweet like you’d expect from a barleywine. This beer is flavored like carrot cake. No hint of the alcohol. This is a knockout.

500ml bottle. Deep and clear amber. Lasting off-white head. Hoppy aroma. Intense and depth flavour of herbs, yeast and dark berries. Full bodied. Some alcohol notes towards the end. More than alright, but somehow a bit out of balance (The Lamb, London 18.09.2006).
