A light amber beer with no head. It has a light fruity ale aroma. The flavor is kind of weak - with a slight sweetness and some bitterness. Nothing special.

A golden beer with no head. It has an intriguing aroma with hints of bitterness as well as fresh citrus. The flavor is very fresh an prickles your tongue with hints of citrus. An OK beer.

Amber; aroma of sulphur, caramel; slightly woody, caramelly and a touch of lingering sulphur in the palate; off-dry finish. Was completely demolished by the wild boar and pheasant pie I had at that little pub in an industrial zone of Manchester close to the Marble Arch.

Perhaps the best beer from Young's - who generally fail at subtlety and flavor integration, and this barleywine is more forgiving of those flaws. This is a strong rich malty ale with strong fruity esters and a solid bitter finish.

I wouldn't call this an English Bitter like Greene King Abbot Ale or Boddington's. It really tasted more like an American Amber like Killian's. It really didn't live up to the wacky name for me, or the price. Nothing really stood out. If given the choice I would get their Double Chocolate Stout next time.

Updating my early pre-geeky notes: Light fruity caramel malt aroma with hint of persimmon and earthy peppery hops. Bright, clear red-amber color with orange overtones. Short fading head but good lacing. Balanced flavor presentation with tingly peppery hops first apparent, followed by an orangey malt flavor with light caramel notes, and a light finishing bitterness. Very smooth, almost slick, mouthfeel, but not undercarbonated. Curious fullness of body despite overall mild flavor - although I might consider that typical of an English Brown Ale (despite its classification here as Bitter...I'd place it as Brown Ale or Dark Mild, except maybe a bit too much hop flavor for Mild.)
