A nice little wit, with some kolsch-ey characteristics as well. Lemony aroma, with spicy notes of thyme and just a bare hint of banana. Phenols show up in the palate. Even, clean finish, with some spice, and thankfully not too many hops. Not very attractice though: cloudy dull gold-yellow - large bubbles on the sides of the glass, but virtually no head, and no lacing.

On tap in Monterey. Hazy light amber with a large heavy lacing, tan head. Grassy aroma with a typical wheat taste. Lots of carbonation that tickles your tongue.

12 oz. bottle, $1.15 from the loose bottle rack at Sam’s Wines, Downers Grove. Kind of a generic looking label, eh. Pours standard beer yellow, tall weizen glass kicks up a bit of yellowish foam. Basic slightly spritzy wheat beer smell. Taste is a decent enough American wheat, but it’s not easy to find any Belgian character or spice to it. Well, no, I do have a bit of bubblegum and orange peel as I go further down the glass. Pleasant, but not quite what it aspires to be.

bottle - thin head, amber color, light malty aroma with a bit of hops. The taste is fairly bland though the balance is alright. Once again I detected hints of the odd tasting, abrasive finish that ruined the other two Mendocino beers I’ve had for me. At least the unpleasantness is mild in this one, hence the somewhat higher rating. I don’t know if it’s the variety of hops they use that I don’t like or what... Rerate Oct ’07 - The latest bottle did not have the bothersome off taste that I complained about in my first rating. It’s a decent, fairly sweet amber. I’ll bump up my rating a bit.

Bottle Pours a clear deep golden, slightly redish with a modest sized but lasting and dense yellowinsh light tan head. Clingy lacing adds to the pleasing appearance. Nice IPA aromas, combination of piny and citrus with just the right amount of malts to balance. Again, flavors are balanced, with the hops up front a bit. Quite bitter and a nice full body. Lasting dry puckering bitterness. In my mind this is a classic IPA.

bottle - typical dark brown to black color, moderate head, faded rapidly, almost no lacing. It tastes like an average stout when it first hits the tongue, though too thin, but then the hops hits. It’s very odd and really unpleasant. I thought it was maybe just my bottle because though this was purchased a couple weeks later, it came from the same store I got my last Mendocino beer, which I also didn’t like. But I see Cazort noticed a similar problem. It’s rather abrasive and the hops just tastes off. Mine was off right from the start of the bottle though. I like good hops, but there’s something wrong here. That makes two different Mendocino beers I’ve had with really bad finishes. Frankly 2.2 is being generous.

Hazy amber colour. The aroma is all hop - citrusy, foresty. Rich earthy hop character, too. Tasty enough because I love hops, but not especially balanced nor dynamic.
