Description
Casa Agria Specialty Ales is a small brewery focusing on mixed fermentation farmhouse style ales and barrel aged wild ales in Ventura County, California. Like much of California, Ventura County agriculture and farming has played a vital role in the development of the communities here throughout time. The mild climate and rich soil allows for several harvests throughout the year making it one of the most valuable resources here. For these reasons the farmhouse style is a perfect style to refresh during a warm dry winter and a mild summer day alike from one harvest to the next. Further influence is found in the food ingredients and diverse cultural traditions of the people who shaped the California of today.

Sample at Baptized in the Funk. This one was softly sour with aroma and flavor of mixed tropical fruit. Very tasty.

750 ml bottle. Bright clear gold with a small fizzy white head. Lemons on top of tropical fruit brett in the aroma. Nice rich, fruity flavors. The sourness leans toward a yogurty lacto character but it’s a pleasantly balanced sour overall. Lots of lemon but there’s also pineapple, mango, guava and grape. Light malt note well in the back. It’s not aggressively acidic, which is a happy surprise. Only moderately tart, at least relative to the current world of sours. Quite dry. The barrel shows up in the taste. Nice oak and a vinous flavor gives the beer more depth. Light feel, somewhat effervescent. Finishes dry and fairly refreshing. Another good one from Casa Agria.

750 ml bottle. This is a very well done sour saison, one of the better in recent memory. Big lemon lime and mineral flavors. There’s mild, fruity funk. Light peach and strawberry. There’s some earth and hay in the background. The barrel balances the flavors out without asserting itself too much. Light oak and vinous note. Taste is on the drier side. Mild to moderate tartness. No real pucker, just a nice refreshing lemon-lime sour note. Very mild malt sweetness. Maybe a little more barrel comes out in the taste. Fairly light feel with a zingy mineral-lime peel edge. Very refreshing and easy to drink. The beer is a light yellow gold, fairly clear depending on bottle handling - solid layer of sediment at the bottom. Very enjoyable. I wasn’t really paying attention for awhile, but Casa Agria is quickly winning me over.

Poured from a bottle dated March 5, 2016. Aroma is very berry forward with quite a bit of tannins. A light, leafy note with some light yogurt notes. Hints of citrus and wheat. Pours a hazy, bright purple red with a small, thick, slightly pink head that quickly recedes to the edges where it lingers. No lacing or legs. Flavor has a moderate acidity, but somewhat sharp with some light lactic acid notes with yogurt and citrus. Moderately strong berry notes with some lighter berry skin. A big of a leafy, herbal note. Mouthfeel is light bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice, very berry sour beer. Lots of skin and tannins in the aroma but a bit less in the flavor. Acidity isn’t too strong but it’s slightly sharp.
