330ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo, who needs some consolation in these days - maybe Italians are not as good in Barley Wines as the Englishmen]. Minimally cloudy, brown-ish ruby colour with small, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, off-white to beige head. Intense, malty aroma, notes of caramel, marzipan, a touch of toffee. Taste is sweet and bitter, malty notes of caramel, marzipan, a touch of toffee, bitter, minimally papery, hoppy counterpart, rather well hidden alcohol; minmally warming finish. Creamy to viscous texture, smooth and soft, slightly cloying palate, fine, soft to flat carbonation. A bit monotonous, not really worth to consume that amount of alcohol with a single beer.

Cask @ The Pub, Hebden Bridge (formerly Calans). Glowing clear golden with a creamy-frothy head. There's a strength to its hop-malt balance, also has an extremely drinkable texture.

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. This pours almost black with a small beige head. The nose is mainly sweet milky coffee. Oats come through straightaway in the mouth, and in their wake comes a mixture of liquorice, roasted malts, aniseed and other spices with some dark fruits lurking underneath. Quite complex, but ultimately a bit disappointing.

18/8/2020. Bottle from CentrAle, Newcastle. As Grace Darling Gold 5.1% abv. Pours lively with a huge white head, settling clear dark gold. Aroma is citrus, tropical fruit, hops, straw, touch of marmalade. Moderate sweetness and medium bitterness. Medium body, soft carbonation. Fruity, with quite a bitter finish. Once it had calmed down, this was pretty decent.

Bottle at home – originally gift from nephew Has an aroma of fruity, floral hops. Pours a golden yellow with a vigorous cream head, that lasts a good while. Lops of hoppy bitterness in the mouth (no lemon or grapefruit nonsense here !), some caramel and malts as well. A nice dry bitter finish. This is very good.

Third by cask on the 2nd day of GBBF Winter 2020, Jewellers' Bar. Shared with Finn. Unclear golden body, filmy layer, spotty lacing. Dough fruity nose. Taste of pineapple and grainy malts. Mid-sweet fruity end. Quite alright. (Birmingham 05.02.2020).
