Draft. Deep amber body with an off-white head, rapidly diminishing. Aroma of biscuit, caramel, toasted malts, citrus. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Caramel taste on top of bread and mustiness. Neither the aroma nor flavor are overly strong, but there’s a good balance between malt and hop with a light lingering bitterness. Tasty for a 4% session beer. Reminded me of a lighter version of their chin wag esb.

Cask pint at the brewery - hazy reddish pour - this is one earthy freakin’ beer - very dry throughout - up front it is fairly estery, with brighter notes of cherry and citrus - crackery malt through the middle, with crisp, vibrant bitterness - dry, earthy, peaty, almost whiskey-ish character - finish is of earthy, dusty yeast and basement qualities - lovely, creamy texture throughout - very nice beer.

Cask @ Hogshead. Deep brown appearance with a big, foamy tan head. Toasty, cocoa, dark caramel, vanilla, nice dessert aroma. Creamy, dark chocolate, somewhat roasty, a bit earthy, light herbal flavor. Easy drinking and nice.

I had a much different experience with this brew than others have - came out of the hand pump surprisingly clear - in fact, had I not seen the draw myself, I might have though they gave me a draught pour by mistake - perhaps that is why I did not taste the dull and musty yeast notes and muddled character that others did - for me, the hops were center stage, especially in the finish - fruity, crisp and vibrant - this played well with the rather prominent ester profile - there was some breadiness - a bit of baked apple and spice - but again, the hops had a nice bite at the end that washed the heaviness away - I enjoyed it.

Cask at Hogshead - dark black with ruby showing around the edges - lovely cascading cask carbonation that settles to a creamy head - smooth, creamy texture from the natural carbonation - mild acidity and medium bitterness, mostly from the dark malts - flavors of creamy dark chocolate, light woody notes, mild fruitiness/esters through the middle - a bit of fig and raisin - some touches of black coffee through the finish, with lingering chocolate - crazy delicious - love it.

Tap @ brewery. A bit hazy, yellow orange appearance with a white head. Light citrus, a bit toasty, floral hoppy aroma. Quite soapy/floral hoppy, mildly toasty, a bit earthy flavor. Creamy and quite bitter. My least favorite here so far.

Tap @ brewery. Clear, deep reddish brown appearance with a cream colored head. Roasty, burnt toffee, mild cocoa, a touch fruity aroma. Quite delicious, a touch smoky, roasty caramel malty, burnt toffee, somewhat earthy, very clean flavor. Easy to drink and quite flavorful.

Keg and cask pours at brewery. Fairly clear, dark burnt orange appearance with a tan head. Mild citrus, rich caramel, grassy, earthy aroma. Fairly biscuity, rich caramel, mild toffee, toasty malty, light orange citrusy flavor. Flavors seem a bit more present and rich in the cask version (which was dry hopped with goldings). Nice stuff.

Cask at the brewery - not sure of the hops used in this firkin, but the flavor profile seems like a mix of British and German noble - the beer is very dry, but with a doughiness the the body that adds some heft and a light estery note - for the most part, the malts are biscuity and semi dry - the hops add a complex fruitiness - a touch of dry minerals throughout - hints of damp earthiness and wood - very nice, indeed.

Cask at the brewery - listed as an ESB, so I have the suspicion that this is the same beer as the "English ESB" in the database - hazy bright red - nose explodes with bright fruity note (grapefruit, strawberry), earthy hops, bready malt and toffee - flavor provides much the same, quite a bit of grapefruit (without the bitterness, but with a touch of the acidity), but this is mostly a malt showcase, with some toffee notes, toasted bread - some hop earthiness but low bitterness - well done.
