2002 Bottle, tasted November 2002: Attractive dark garnet color with medium beige head. Warming aroma with plenty of nutmeg notes. Flavor is strong with nutmeg, with a hint of chocolate. Balanced finish: mild sweetness, light bitterness, lingering nutmeg spice. Overall pretty good, but the nutmeg is sure different, weird and something that takes getting used to. An acquired taste, but worth acquiring.

Their porter is much better, but this is a very distinct beer. From what I''m told, it goes great with seafood, and from the flavor, I can tell that it probably does.

Ruby with brief head. Fruity, ashy aroma. Roasty, complex short flavour, some crystal malt character. Sharp mouthfeel and medium bitterness.

The creaminess and subtle sweetness reminds me more of the better oatmeal stouts (ie. Samuel Smith). This is probably one of the smoothest porters I've had. I'm a big fan of anchor beer, and this is, by far, my favorite.

Dark golden color with a medium thick slightly off-white head. Strong floral aroma with a faint spice presence. Wheaty, citrusy flavor up front that tapered somewhat by the end. Slightly dry, bitter finish. Not as bland as a lot of summer ales but still kind of lackluster.

An unclear orange beer with very little head. It has a fresh aroma of cowberries, black curran, orange, and spices. It tastes sweet of orange, cowberries, black currant, and spices and finishes of with a slightly bitter taste. A fantastic beer - definatly one of the best beers I've ever had.

Near black. Nice chocolate aroma. Slightly sweet in the nose. Richly malty. Hints of licorice. Balanced bitterish finish. Very good!

Dark amber color. Strong malt aroma, caramel. Malt mouthfeel, very strong caramel (the strongest of all the beers I have ever tasted) just supported by some bitterness (not enough for me). Ordinary palate.

Great unique flavor of bitter malt with and a great bitter aftertaste. Medium bodied, but could use some more balance. Very rich beer though over all. a very unique beer. i love the taste right after it goes down your throat.

surprised this one isnt ranked higher. just had the other day and it was the only beer i drank. The aftertaste lingered forever and it was perfect. Great balance of fruit/hops. Maybe could add a little more body to it, but then it is a summer beer. Very crisp and very dry. Floral aroma, not too heavy on the carbonation either. definitely gotta love the grapefruit. 8/5/8/4/18

Very aromatic and delicate nose. Not as citrusy as I remember, though it still has a touch of pink grapefruit. Very floral and light, with well-attenuated, very clean malt behind it. Just a touch of biscuits and light honey giving an orange marmalade effect from the hops and malt combo.
Naturally carbonated, but not bottle conditioned, it still has a fairly tight, engaging carbonation and substantial body, though the malt is very lean and attenuated. Perhaps a touch of paperiness/astringency, with an underlying bitterness that needs some balancing. That or just a higher flavor/bittering ratio of hops. Dry, not full of crystal malt or other distractors with a clean, well-made structure. Maybe not quite a 5 for appearance, as the head is a touch feeble, nor is there any tremendous lacing.
Still, for as high as this stood in my memory, it lived up pretty well. Score reflects my most recent bottle.
