Interesting and unique beer - difficult to judge. Mild tasting, with a moderate hop presence. It really does, in some ways, have char's of both a lager and ale. Thanks to the new hop guide, I can say that I don't like Northern Brewer hops as a finish/aromatic hop. The hop aromatics and flavors in this beer present as a slightly woody and earthy/musty note that I don't find particularly agreeable. Bitter finish is a bit strong for this light bodied beer.

Light amber, always has a decent head. Foresty cascade aroma, lightly toasted biscuits, vague lemon, salmonberries. Moderate bitterness - I wonder how I would have described that in '75, maybe ULTRA HOP JUICE SO BITTER I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO TASTE AGAIN - how the times have changed. Hoppy, fruity, with a light yeast note and light background malts. Though its hop content is not the shocker it once must have been, it succeeds today on its balance, which remains wonderful. Simple and classy, a deserving standard-bearer for the micro movement.

A very good beer. Bronze colored in the glass. Crisp and floral aroma. Same taste, nice and dry. A classic.

I have to agree with everyone else here: this is one of the great porters. It has just a hint of chocolate, plus a great roasted malt flavor and is not overly sweet - it actually has a nice mild bitterness that seems to result from both hops and the burnt flavors (roasted malts).
