wheresthepath Profile - Brewver (Dev)

Keg at The Rake, Borough Market, London. Opaque yellow with a lasting white head. Lovely juiciness up front - mango and clementine maybe. Fresh cut grass and a touch of pine kick in at the end. Really fresh hops in this. Very tasty and drinkable, a great NEIPA - but nevertheless I reserve the right to be cynical (clichéd though it may be) about "Christmas" beers like this that taste of summer!

Can from Sainsbury's, Wycombe. Purpley red with a pale pink head and an obvious fizz. Blackcurrants, cream and blackcurrant leaves. Moderate sourness. Bit too fizzy for my liking, and certainly one-dimensional, but very enjoyable nevertheless.

Can from Hanley Farm Shop, near Chepstow. A dull pale gold brew with a light to middling fizz. The fresh and vibrant elderflower up front is lovely, but the honey behind is too sweet to go with it. With a drier mead this may have been really rather good; as it was I still enjoyed the elderflower but the underlying sweetness did feel like it was dissolving my teeth by the end. Nevertheless, the low ABV keeps it very drinkable. Overall quite ok.

Came here on a Monday evening in November before seeing Dea Matrona at The Garage (great gig, especially considering that I didn't really know much of their stuff). It seemed quite a grubby and raucous 'Spoons (especially for a Monday night); ugly both inside and out. Eight cask pumps (4 with their regular beers, 4 off their seasonal range, no local brews) plus the usual macro kegs, craft cans etc. Service was fast albeit slightly surly; we did get our drinks quickly and my beer was in reasonable nick. Didn't have any food. The place generally felt like it needed a bit of TLC, but I guess it did the job of providing a bit of warmth whilst we waited for the gig venue to open.

Bag in a box from the producer's own stand at the Witney Christmas Market. Rich deep gold in colour, this was a tad on the sweet side of medium with honeyed caramel up front. Lovely smooth mouthfeel. There was a hint of tannin, and a touch of funk and dryness. It lacks complexity, but it's satisfying and goes down a treat. Enjoyed it, yum.

Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Red with a beige head. Toffee and brown bread. Quite a bit of pine with a smattering of red berries. Nice in small quantities, but I'm not the biggest fan of pine in beer and I wouldn't have wanted a full pint.
