Craft Beer Pub - U Škvorů (Čerčany, Czechia 🇨🇿)

You know what, running into places like this semi-randomly makes doing this, exploring the world "guided" by beer, adding and reviewing venues so, so worth it.

Čerčany are a village on the Sázava, with just one stop (Mrač) between them and Benešov. And, well... this village, of 3000 or so people has apparently one of the oldest and definitely one of the most serious pubs in the Czech Republic. Among other things, a restaurant, it has a classic interior, but everyone was on the terrace outside. The people running this have to be enormous enthusiasts, huge respect for that, but didn't get to communicate with them much - all the orders were directly at the bar, and they did well to keep track of everything going on. So... the bar... it boasts 10 taps of assorted craft. 4 lagers, 3 of which were ticks (and two new breweries) for me, and 1 of which is the bloody Zehendner Mönchsambacher Lagerbier!!! There was some Czech craft, of course - Sibeeria, SQBRU, Haksna, Bad Flash and... ZHŮŘÁK! I mean, Chris' beer is rare even in Plzeň and Prague. And all of that rounded by a smoothie from Funky Fluid, Kasteel Rouge and Weihenstephaner Hefe! There is more interesting stuff in the can, including a can of Adroit Theory that I skipped this time, but wow. Adroit Theory in a random Czech village. I mean, not even Adroit Theory hoped or expected their beer to get anywhere near Čerčany, I'm sure. Very good prices as well.

Enormous, ginormous respect for this place. If you're anywhere nearby, you absolutely should visit it. It's easy to connect with a visit to Benešov, or after it, returning on the S9 to Prague. Just turn right when you're off the train, and go along the Nádražní street past the Tesco, and turn left, going uphill till you see it, 5 minutes' walk.

Restaurace Ferdinand (Benešov, Czechia 🇨🇿)

So, unusually, Ferdinand might have a maltery (and a very good one) unlike most breweries, but it doesn't have a brewery restaurant on its grounds. Just... close to its grounds - and it's, very unusually, a collab with a local Cuban culinary entrepreneur. So, yes... it might look like a classic, not too big Czech restaurant, bear the name of the brewery down the road and serve its beers - there is an evident Cuban influence on the menu! Gotta love random situations like these. It was empty on a lazy, hot, sunny Benešov afternoon. Everyone was at Na Sladovce probably, but it was too far away for me to consider. Just me, a couple in another room and the bar lady, who was friendly and did her job by the book. The cuban sandwich (in a burger bun) was nice enough, but the bun didn't seem the freshest (again, Saturday afternoon). Would try some other stuff and will revisit when in town. 5 taps, one of which bore the new, improved 10° - which was in excellent shape, probably some 11°, Max and 12° combination, and the Beer Mix Pomeranč, another tick. Not the widest, but appreciated, and the prices were good - I think the 10° set me back 40 crowns, and I could have easily gone for more had I the time.

All in all, if you're in town, you probably shouldn't skip it!
