Bottle shop which is oddly spacious with shelves on the side, it’s a bit of a strange layout that doesn’t use a lot of the building. Lovely terrace outside and tasting table in the back. We chose the terrace; more wine than beer present. It had an okay selection of modern craft, stout and barley wine side, having a bit more surprises than the hoppy one. We picked a beer from the fridge which turned out not to be plugged in, it’s a bit odd to have a terrace but no chilled beer. The owner is a big music nerd and we had a pleasant chat, very friendly guy so bonus points for that, picked up a barley wine to go, standard prices.

Located on the main market with a sizeable terrace. Large venue inside with a church-like ceiling dating back centuries apparently. It seems like it went bankrupt not too long ago but managed to restart. Service was friendly with a big first job vibe. Interior is a mix of steampunk, history and tackiness, quite old too and old-fashioned mindset decorations. It’s quite big and it’s a slightly odd mix of things. Tap list is mainly their beers, IPA was poor and Quadrupel was very light even with the advertised caramel coloring, tastes like new Dutch brewery from 15 years ago. NA options, sweet fruit beers and Dommelsch pils also available. Food portions looked very big. We had some loempia snacks and they were huge. This felt like a trip to the past in many way, zero point for making a detour for this, one of the two interesting options beer-wise in Helmond.

We sat outside on the terrace, but I checked the indoors and it’s an impressive dark old-fashioned bar with loads of character. The toilets are literally in the catacombs. It seems like this bar has a long history with a re-opening in 2020. Good service. Loads of Rolling Hills on the menu but also loads of local contract brewed beers etc. Lot of stuff I don’t think that I have even seen before and I got a 5-year-old Orval from the menu. Easily one of the most interesting bars in Mechelen, maybe even the most. I will return.

Close to the station and very popular on a Saturday afternoon. Panterland focuses on board games, Warhammer, Magic the Gathering etc. All visitors except for me were engaged in these. Things for sale too related to this. The menu covers soda, coffee, tea, g&t and commercial beers. Next to the commercial beers there is a craft beer list going from Belgium (BBP, Alvinne etc.) to international beers (Menno Olivier, Uiltje, Frontaal, Arpus etc.). Definitely some interesting things to be found. It’s a cool place even if you don’t know anything about the scene, beer selection is interesting and way cheaper than in Atwerpen.
