Named in honour of Shepherd Neame’s historic Thames sailing barge (The Greta), Red Sails Cherry Porter pays homage to many a Kentish icon.
The barges’ distinctly coloured sails littered the estuary throughout the 19th century – the heyday of Porter.
Vessels exported the finest Kentish produce to the capital, including beer from The Faversham Brewery and succulent Kentish Morello cherries.
Initially brewed by Shepherd Neame’s No.18 Yard Brewhouse, then rebrewed for the October 2015 JDW festival.

Cask gravity at Kent BF 2015. Dark ruby beer. Condition is fine. Cherry flavour but not real cherry. Chocolate aroma some yeast. It’s then a thinning artificial cherry thing poor.

Cask at the haymarket bar... Dark brown black... Thick tan head... Soft sweet fruits chocolate nose.. Dark malts.. Big cherry.. Light wishy-washy body.. Dark roast.. Long thin cherry roast

Cask. Appearance is a dark, Ruby red, almost black at the top, a lighter ruby base. Small clingy off-white head. Aroma- roast malt, chocolate, dark fruit, cherry, slightly vinous. Smooth and chocolatey taste, roasty finish, cherry bakewell undertones. Nice.

The Sun Inn summer beer festival, Kelvedon. Cask. Dark red brown beer, still transparent. Tidy pale tan head. Palate is light and semi dry with modest fine carbonation. Mellow dark malts, just a touch of roast. Mild malt sweetness. Tangy and unsweet dark chocolate. The cherry is well integrated and just mildly tart. Pretty well joined up.

Cask at Shakespeare; clear coca cola brown with a frothy tan head, aroma has dark fruits and a hint of chocolate, taste has roast malt, light cherry, hint of coffee.

On cask at the Haymarket. Appearance - opaque black and shiny like black olive. Generous head. Nose - toffee, nuts, light chocolate. Liquorice maybe. Taste - big cherry note knocks all the nuts, biscuits and toffee to the wayside. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - it’s good but I wish the cherry was more integrated in the beer. Because it’s not, it makes it one big cherry note.

Cask at the haymarket. Pours clear dark red brown with a thin beige head. Aromas of roast coffee, hazelnuts. Taste is nutty, sweet. Light spice on the finish. Not bad for this brewery!
