A rich, dark ale with roasted malt flavours, hints of chocolate and caramel, and a smooth, warming finish. It’s a bold yet balanced beer, perfect for those who enjoy a classic British mild with depth and character.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours almost black with a small tan head and good lacing. Malts dominate what little aroma there is – plus hints of chocolate and parkin. Malts again to the fore in the mouth where there is appreciable bitterness and a creamy texture. Flavour is augmented by liquorice, molasses and cola plus traces of honey and treacle. This both decent (full flavoured and enjoyable) and also somewhat disappointing. I was expecting something really special from a combination of Thornbridge, Burton Union and my favourite beer style.

Cask at The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak, London. An almost black coloured pour with a thin beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate, coffee taste and aroma. It's fine but expected more after a lot of hype surrounding this one.

Can from the brewery monthly beer club. Pours almost blank with a thin beige head. Aromas of chocolate and light roast. Taste adds a hint of liquorice. Lacks a bit of dark fruitiness for a mild in my opinion. OK though.
